The Lead:  Mary Washington held on for a 59-55 victory over host Roanoke in the championship game of the Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic in Salem.

How it Happened

  • The Maroons found themselves down 16-8 with 3:27 left in the first quarter. RC would score eight consecutive points, capped by a pair free throws from Ayanna Scarborough that pulled Roanoke even at the 1:20 mark.
  • A back and forth second quarter saw the game tied at 26 before the Eagles scored the final five points of the half with Natalie Brennan free-throws in the final seconds sending UMW to the intermission with a 31-26 advantage.
  • After a Molly Hassell three-point basket made it a 37-33 game in favor Mary Washington, the Eagles went on a 6-0 run, moving ahead 43-33 on an Emily Thompson bucket with 2:13 left in the third quarter.
  • RC rallied scoring eight of the final 12 points of the quarter, pulling within six at 47-41 when Sayre Brandstatter drained a three pointer with 25 seconds left on the clock.
  • A three-point play by Molly Sharman in the opening minute of the fourth quarter extended the Mary Washington lead to 50-41.
  • Roanoke answered with seven unanswered points, cutting the UMW lead to 50-48 on a Brandstatter three-pointer with 6:31 to go in the game.
  • With UMW leading 55-50, Brandstatter hit another three-pointer to make it a two-point game with just over three minutes to play.
  • Bri Harper knocked down one-of-two free-throws on UMW's next possession then forced a steal on the defensive end, was fouled and made two more free-throws to put the Eagles up 58-53 with 2:42 on the clock.
  • Scarborough got RC within two at 58-55 but that would be as close as the Maroons would get as Mary Washington held them scoreless for the final 2:28 to hold on for the win.
  • Brandstatter finished with 12 points, while Harrel had 11. Hopson and Scarborough each had nine and Alquiza had six steals. For their efforts, Harrel and Hopson were named to the all-tournament team.
  • Shifflett had 14 points for UMW to earn all-tournament honors. Thompson had 12 points to earn tournament MVP.
