The Short Story: Lauren Keel led all scorers with 16 points and added 11 rebounds for her first double-double of the season to lead the Roanoke women's basketball team to a 64-51 win over the Randolph-Macon Yellow Jackets on Saturday afternoon.  

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter saw the visiting Yellow Jackets score the first six points of the game before the Maroons went on a 12-2 run with 3:37 left on the clock. A pair of free throws by Morgan Carter with 48 seconds left in the quarter extended the Roanoke lead to five. A single free throw by the Yellow Jackets with three second left cut the Maroon lead to 16-12 after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • R-MC scored the first four points on the second quarter and the Yellow Jackets took the second lead of the game at 21-20 with 7:06 left on the clock before halftime. The Maroons then went on an 8-0 run to jump out to a 28-21 lead. The visitors would respond with a 7-0 of their own before the break to tie the score at 28-28 as the teams headed into the locker room.
  • Neither team was able to find their footing early in the third quarter with both teams scoring seven points to remain tied at 35-35 with 6:41 on the clock. R-MC would take its first lead since the first quarter with layup at 6:02. With 1:54 left the period, the Maroons retook the lead on a jumper from Keel, 39-38. Roanoke went on to hold the Yellow Jackets scoreless the rest of the quarter while adding six more to extend its lead to 45-38 heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The closest R-MC would get the rest of the game was nine points at 9:33 with Roanoke leading 49-40. Sayre Brandstatter pushed the lead to double-digits on the Maroon's next possession and the Yellow Jackets never got back within single digits. Roanoke led by as many as 16 with just over two and half minutes left and finished with the 64-51 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • While both teams made 20 field goals and each made six three-pointers, the Maroons made 18 of 23 free throws attempted to just five of eight for Randolph-Macon.
  • Keel led three Maroons in double-figures with 16 points as she recorded her first double-double with 11 rebounds as well. Both Brandstatter (15) and Rose Sande (13) also finished with double-digit points.
  • Roanoke forced 21 R-MC turnovers while leading the Yellow Jackets in points off turnovers 19-11, bench points (34-14), and second chance points (17-11).
