UMW Softball Drops Two to #6 Va. Wesleyan on Tuesday

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games to sixth ranked Virginia Wesleyan University on Tuesday at the Battleground, falling in the opener, 8-1, and in the second game, 4-2. The Eagles slip to 13-9 on the season.

Mary Washington jumped ahead in the first game with a run in the first, as Shelby Presgrave singled, advanced on a groundout, and scored on a single from Bridget Laychak. UMW held the 1-0 lead until the fifth inning, when the Marlins scored four runs. VWU added four in the seventh for the 8-1 final.

Presgrave led the Eagles with a single and double, while Laychak added the RBI single. Caitlyn Burch took the loss, allowing one earned run in seven innings on eight hits. She didn't walk a batter, and struck out four.

In the second game, Virginia Wesleyan scored one in the second, but UMW answered in its half of the inning. Brigid Ward and Erica Shoop singled and Ward singled on a hit from Kennedy Darling.

The Marlins scored two in the third and one in the fifth. UMW added a run in the seventh on an infield hit from Laychak with the bases loaded.

Presgrave led the offense with three hits, while Shoop added two. Samantha Stuart took the loss, allowing three earned runs on six hits in seven innings, striking out three and walking none.

UMW will return to action on Wednesday, as the Eagles host Eastern Mennonite University at 3:00 p.m. for a doubleheader.
