Late Surge Lifts CNU Past Lynchburg in Overtime, 82-77

More news about: Christopher Newport

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Just like the first home win of the John Krikorian era, it would take more than 40 minutes of game time to earn his first road victory. Coincidentally,it would come against the same opponent, as Christopher Newport improved to 5-3 this season with their second overtime victory this season over Lynchburg College (5-6), this time in an 82-77 final.

CNU erased a 12-point lead with less than five minutes remaining to force overtime and continued to surge in the extra time for the five-point road win, the first of Krikorian's coaching career at CNU. Krikorian's first win at CNU and first home victory came against the Hornets in the first game of the season, as CNU was stretched to double overtime before taking a 108-100 victory at the Freeman Center.

Senior Mike Green would become the 26th Captain in school history to score 1,000 points in his career with a bucket in the second half. He needed nine points to reach the mark and finished with 15, tying him with Korey Lewis for 25th all-time (1,006 pts).

Junior guard Conley Taylor led the way in the first half with 14 points on a terrific 6-for-7 from the field, but the Captains would fall behind in the first half, 36-30. The Hornets held a decided 26-17 edge on the glass in the first half, helping them maintain their early lead.

In the second half, Lynchburg continued to add to its lead, getting it up to as high as 12 points with just 4:46 remaining in regulation. CNU would take over, though, closing the half on an 18-6 run to send the game into overtime. The Captains pulled ahead on a pair of Tra Benefield free-throws with 17 seconds remaining, but Brandan Connor would knock down a layup in the final possession for Lynchburg to tie it back up before the buzzer.

With the momentum, CNU cruised to the win in overtime, outscoring the home team 12-7 and holding them to just 29% shooting in overtime. Taylor led the way, knocking down 5-of-6 free-throws in overtime and finishing with 28 points in the game. He went 12-for-13 from the charity stripe in the game.

Taylor's 28 were a game-high and he also grabbed a season-high eight rebounds. Green's 15 points were second for CNU and came on an efficient 7-for-8 shooting night. Newcomer Paul Meredith and the rookie Benefield rounded out the double-figure scoring with 14 and 11 respectively. Meredith was tremendous in his second game as a Captain, posting a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists, the first points-assists double-double since Feb. 20, 2009 when Davon Barton had 19 and 10 against Methodist.

Lynchburg slips to 5-6 overall this season with its second loss to the Captains. The Hornets were led by Austin Chillemi with a double-double, scoring 16 points and hauling in 10 rebounds. Nate Campbell also had 16 points in the loss.

Christopher Newport remains out on the road as they travel to Frostburg State for an afternoon game this Sunday at 1:00 pm.
