Bernard's Hat Trick Leads UMW Field Hockey to OT Win

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team fought hard to gain an overtime win in its season opener against Roanoke College. Sophomore Emma Bernard (Fredericksburg, Va/ Chancellor) recorded her first career hat trick in her first career game as an Eagle.

The Eagles came out strong in the first quarter with back to back shots from Bernard. A penalty corner by Sophomore Riley Tengwall (Grasonville, Md/ Kent Island) looked to give UMW the lead but was denied by Roanoke's defense. The quarter ended with a 0-0 score.

Coming out quickly in the second quarter, the Eagles earned two corners but again were stopped by the Maroon's defense. Tengwall added two late shots in the quarter but neither team was able to add a goal before halftime.

UMW continued coming out strong by gaining back to back penalty corners followed by shots by Bernard. The Maroons quickly gained control and received a penalty corner resulting in the first goal of the evening. Less than two minutes later the Maroons added another goal to end the third period with a 2-0 lead.

The fourth quarter was all under the Eagle's control. Bernard notched her first career goal to bring the score to 2-1. With two minutes remaining in the game, the Eagles earned a penalty corner where Bernard added her second goal of the game off a Tengwall assist. The fourth period ended in a 2-2 score leading to overtime play.

With overtime in play, the Eagles wasted no time in gaining possession. Senior Sydney Keating (Fairfax, Va/ Fairfax) assisted Bernard in her third and final goal of the evening to give UMW the victory.
