Lipton's Late Goal Lifts UMW Field Hockey Past Bridgewater, 2-1

Freshman midfielder Monique Lipton (Virginia Beach, Va. / Kempsville) scored on a breakaway with 2:50 remaining in regulation to give the University of Mary Washington field hockey team a 2-1 win over Bridgewater College on Wednesday afternoon at the Battleground. The UMW Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season, while Bridgewater slips to 0-2.

Both defenses reigned in the first quarter, as Mary Washington gained eight shots, but couldn't find the cage, and UMW's defenders kept Bridgewater from getting a shot off. UMW went ahead one minte into the second quarter, as sophomore Emma Bernard (Fredericksburg, Va. / Chancellor) scored on a penalty corner from sophomore Paige Stewart (Richmond, Va. / Hermitage).

The Eagles held the 1-0 lead into the third, when Bridgewater answered on a corner at 37:20. The game remained tied until the final minutes, when Lipton's heroics broke the tie. Bernard charged ahead on a 3 vs. 2 breakaway, and slid the ball late to Lipton, for her first collegiate score.

Mary Washington led in shots, 22-2, and led in corners, 12-3. UMW goalkeeper Bailey McNabb made one save on the day.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday when they visit Rhodes College at 11:00 a.m.
