The Lead: The Roanoke women's basketball team traveled to Guilford College looking for their third straight ODAC win to start the season. The Maroons led throughout a majority of the game before a late Quaker rally would hand RC her first conference loss of the season, 60-47.

How it Happened:

  • Defense was on display early as both teams struggled to find their range from the field. Over the first 10 minutes of play, Roanoke shot 31.3% while holding their hosts to just 20% from the field.
  • Down two, Morgan Micallef hit a jump shot in the waning seconds to tie the score at 11-11 after one period of play.
  • The second quarter would see the Maroons take the lead on a three-pointer by Molly Hassell, a lead they would hold for the remainder of the first half.
  • Hassell and Kristina Harrel would net seven of the team's 11, second quarter points as the defense would keep the Quakers in single digits to take a three point edge into the break, 22-19.
  • Roanoke came out of the break and seized control and after a pair of Rose Sande free throws, the Maroons had opened a 13 point spread, 35-22. However, Guilford would close the quarter with a 10-3 run to close the gap.
  • Renee Alquiza would score nine points as RC stretched their lead to six points heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Both teams would continue to struggle as the defensive battle waged on in the third frame. Roanoke would once again hold Guilford to under 30% shooting (3-12) while building their lead heading into the final period of play.
  • RC would continue to hold an advantage until a Miracle Walters layup tied the score at 41-41 with six and a half minutes to play.
  • Harrel hit a pair of free throws to give Roanoke a 43-41 edge with 5:00 to go, but the Quakers would answer with six consecutive points. Alquiza scored to make it 47-49 as the clock ticked under two minutes.
  • Roanoke would not score over the final 1:52 as the Quakers pulled away late to maintain their perfect start to the season, 6-0.
  • Alquiza finished with 12 points and eight rebounds while Harrel added 10, including a perfect, 4-4, from the free throw line. Sande scored eight off the bench as the Roanoke reserves out-scored the Quakers 12-5.

Up next: The Maroons will travel to the reigning ODAC Champions on Saturday when they pay a visit to Shenandoah at 2:00pm.
