  • The Short Story: The Roanoke men's basketball led by as many as 19 points in the second half on the way to a 78-60 win over Bridgewater in the Maroons' ODAC opener Wednesday evening. Justin Kuthan tied a game-high with 22 points and had his first double-double of the season while adding 11 rebounds. He was one of three Maroons in double figures.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Roanoke scored the first basket of the game on a Kasey Draper layup with 18:27 left in the first half with the Eagles responding just 12 seconds later to tie the score at 2-2. This was the last time Bridgewater tied the score as it was all Maroons after. A quick 6-0 run put Roanoke ahead 8-2with 16:59 left.
  • The Eagles pulled within six points twice later in the first half before the Maroons led them scoreless for over three minutes, leading 29-20 with 4:10 left before the break. The rest of the half went back and forth with the Maroons leading by 11, 36-25, at the intermission.
  • The second half was much like the first, but with both teams scoring more than they did in the first 20 minutes. However, the Eagles were not able to catch up as the Maroons continued to pull away in the second half.
  • The closest Bridgewater got was eight at 51-43 with 11:01 left in the game. Roanoke responded with a 13-6 run to have a 64-49 lead with 5:21 left. The Eagles scored their final points with 47 seconds remaining as the Maroons kept them at bay for the 78-60 win.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Kuthan's 22 points tied his career-high setback on Jan. 18 against Ferrum.
  • Marcus Morgan (12) and Draper (11) also reached double figures. 
  • The Maroons shot 48.3% from the field (29-of-60) while holding Bridgewater to just 36.1% shooting.
  • Roanoke led the Eagles in free throws (16-7), rebounds (48-33), assists (13-10), points off turnovers (17-5), points in the paint (44-16), fast break points (25-9), and bench points (40-27).
