Roanoke fell 4-3 in the nightcap to Averett

The Basics
Game 1

Score: Averett 9, Roanoke 0
Records: Maroons 9-8 | Cougars 9-2
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Averett raced out to an early advantage and scored in every inning, taking the opener of the twin bill in Salem.

How it Happened:

  • The first Cougar hitter of the night reached on an error but was quickly erased by a fielder's choice. However, powered by a two-run triple, Averett would hang three runs on the board in the opening frame.
  • The visitors would continue to add to their advantage with single runs in the second and third before scoring twice in the fourth and two more runs in the fifth to close out the Maroons in five innings.
  • Rebecca Hensley and Hailey Baldwin combined to go 2-3, accounting for the RC offense in a game that would see the Maroons being out-hit by Averett to the tune of 10-2.

The Basics
Game 2

Score: Roanoke 3, Averett 4
Records: Maroons 9-9 | Cougars 10-2
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: Game two would see the Cougars take a one run lead. The Maroons would load the bases but only managed the tying run. Averett would break the tie, late, and hang on for the non-conference win.

How it Happened:

  • The Cougars struck in the top of the first with a double followed by an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
  • RC would respond with a pair in the bottom half of the frame to take their first lead of the day. Hensley led off with a single to left and then scored when Brooke Trapuzzano delivered a double to deep right center. Then Meri Bostic laced a double off the outstretched glove of the third baseman to add to the RC advantage.
  • The lead would hold until the top of the third when Kaitlyn Aherron hit a two-run home run over the center field fence.
  • The Maroons would answer in the bottom half to tie. Bostic would start the frame off with a single and RC would make it first and second with a hit by Shanan Hester. A walk by Makayla Austin would load the bases and set the stage for a big inning. Karle Cundiff hit a long drive over the left fielder's head, but the runners had to hold due to a good effort by the outfielder and only one run would cross the plate. With the bases still loaded and only one out, the next RC hitter would ground into a 5-2 double play to stop the Roanoke threat.
  •  The fifth inning would see the second Cougar round tripper of the night to re-take the lead.
  • The bottom half would be Roanoke's last best chance. Riley Croghan drew a walk and advanced to third on a Cundiff single. However, Aherron would record her fourth strikeout of the night to squash the RC rally.
  • Jada Karnes pitched the complete game for the Maroons, giving up four runs while striking out six.
  • Cundiff was 3-3 with an RBI while Bostic and Hester each went 2-4.

Up Next: Roanoke is scheduled to be back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Greensboro for a pair of games with the Pride.
