The Basics
Score: Roanoke 1 | Shenandoah 3

Records: Maroons 5-7 / 0-3 ODAC | Hornets 11-1 / 4-0 ODAC
Location: Salem, Va.

The Lead: After a pair of non-conference games, the Roanoke College field hockey team was back in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action on Wednesday night when they played host to Shenandoah. The Hornets wasted little time in seizing control with a goal just seconds into the matchup. Just before the half, Shenandoah added to their lead but the Maroons responded 1:30 later and the score was 2-1 at the break. The hornets netted an insurance goal in the third quarter and held on for the 3-1 ODAC win.

Highlights:

  • Just 36 seconds into the game, the visitors grabbed an early lead with an unassisted score.
  • With three minutes before the half, the Hornets added to their lead. However, a minute and 20 seconds later, Roanoke made it 2-1 on a Katherine Martin goal.
  • At the 37-minute mark, Shenandoah built their lead back to two scores on what proved to be the final score of the evening.
  • Roanoke was under siege for much of the third quarter as the Hornets would attempt 10 shots in the frame.
  • Madison Wingerter got the start in goal once again and recorded 11 saves, the first double-digit save effort of her career.

Up next: The Maroons travel to Eastern Mennonite on Saturday for an 11:00am game with the Royals.
