The Short Story: The Roanoke College field hockey team set a new school-record in a 2-0 win over Sweet Briar on the road Tuesday evening. The Maroons have won six-straight games by shutout, breaking the previous record that was set at the beginning of the 2000 season.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Just before the end of the first period, Hope Keller took a pass from Grace Vernarelli and scored the game-winner at 13:25.
  • The second quarter was scoreless for both teams as the Maroons had a 1-0 lead at the break.
  • It did not take long in the third quarter for Roanoke to score an insurance goal when Martha Hurley scored just 4:20 into the period off an assist from Mary Wisher.
  • Neither team was able to score the remainder of the contest with the Maroons winning 2-0.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • Madison Wingerter saved all three shots she faced on goal in the second half, playing all 60 minutes. She has not allowed a goal in 369:39 minutes.
  • Roanoke had 22 shots to just four for Sweet Briar while also leading in penalty corners 19-2.
