The Lead: After earning a split at the university of Lynchburg yesterday, the Roanoke softball team was back in the Hill City to face Randolph college in an Old Dominion Athletic conference (ODAC) double header. The Maroons scored a pair if early runs in the opener and held on for a 2-1 win. In game two, Roanoke trailed 5-3 going into the top of the seventh. The Maroons scored five runs on four hits and a pair of Randolph errors to rally for the sweep of the WildCats with an 8-6 victory.

Highlights:

  • Jordyn DiFava walked and scored on a Shanan Hester double to left field to give RC a 1-0 lead.
  • The Maroons would add to their advantage in the top of the second when Makayla Austin started the inning with a base hit to center. A sacrifice bunt moved Austin into scoring position and a base hit by Morgan Clark would give Roanoke all the offense they needed.
  • Jada Karnes started and pitched a complete game, giving up three hits, no earned runs, all while striking out five.
  • Hester was 2-3 with an RBI, Austin and Clark recorded the other two hits as Roanoke picked up the 2-1 win.

Highlights:

  • A Rachel Sirbaugh triple would send Meri Bostic home as Roanoke took an early lead, 1-0.
  • Down 3-1 in the top of the fourth, Kate Houle drew a base on balls and after an Austin free pass, runners were on first and second. A wild pitch moved the runners up 60-feet with Houle scoring on a Riley Croghan sacrifice fly. Madison Cooke reached on an error and the game would be ties at 3-3.
  •  Two WildCat runs in the sixth would see Roanoke in need of a seventh inning rally. Hester delivered a one-out double and was pinch run for by Clark. Roanoke would get down to their last out aead of a Houle walk. Austin singled and advanced on an error that would send both runners home for a 5-5 tie. Austin would put Roanoke in front, scoring on another Randolph wild pitch. Meagen Evans singled, giving way to Katie Collier, who scored when Croghan reached on an error by the right fielder, to complete the Roanoke rally, 8-5.
  • Hester took the mound in the bottom of the seventh, getting the final three outs to secure the 8-6 win for the Maroons.
  • Murphy was 2-2 with a run driven in, while five other Maroons would record one hit apiece.

Up next: Roanoke is scheduled to travel to Bridgewater for a pair of ODAC games on Wednesday, with first pitch at 3:00pm.
