Roanoke Starts 2-0 In ODAC Play

The Lead: The Roanoke College softball team hosted Shenandoah for their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) 2021 opener. The Hornets raveled to Salem for a double header on Monday afternoon after having to reschedule from the weekend due to weather. The Maroons would record 11 hits to score eight runs in taking game one, 8-0. In the nightcap, Roanoke raced out to a 5-0 lead and hung on for the 5-2 win and a 2-0 start to ODAC play.

How it Happened:

  • RC would get the scoring started when Rachel Sirbaugh walked before Makayla Austin singled and Jordyn DiFava reached on an error to load the bases. Emma Eccles and Rebecca Hensley would make it 2-0 with a pair of RBI singles.
  • Jada Karnes pitched five shutout innings, giving up just two hits and recording seven strikeouts.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Roanoke would end the game early with six runs. Hensley and Brooke Trapuzzano singled ahead of a Shanan Hester double to make it 4-0. Austin would make it 6-0 with a single up the middle to score Sirbaugh and Diana Housh. Eccles drove in Austin and Hensley would end the game with a sac fly.
  • Austin was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI while Hensley went 2-4 with a run and pair of RBI with Eccles getting a pair of hits with two RBI.

How it Happened:

  • After registering a 1-2-3 top of the first, Hensley singled and stole second and would advance to third on a ground out. The first run would score on a passed ball and RC was once again in the lead.
  • Three innings later and still leading 1-0, Roanoke would see three runs cross the plate. Trapuzzano singled and advanced on an Austin one bagger. Karnes laid down a sac bunt to make it second and third and Sirbaugh would walk to load the bases. Austin drove in a pair with a shot to center field and DiFava made it 4-0 with a ground out.
  • Roanoke added one in the sixth on a DiFava single to center.
  • The Hornets would plate a pair in the seventh but it wasn't enough as Roanoke finished off the sweep.
  • Morgan Bomhardt earned her second win of the season by going five scoreless innings of one-hit ball.
  • Sirbaugh was 1-2 with two runs scored while Austin and DiFava each drove in two runs.

Up Next: Roanoke steps back out of conference on Wednesday with a trip to face Greensboro College.
