The Lead: The Maroons, fresh off a home sweep of Susquehanna, welcomed Franklin & Marshall to Haley Toyota Field on Sunday afternoon. The Diplomats used a four-run sixth inning to break open a close game as Roanoke fell 8-4.

Highlights:

  • The Maroons fell behind when F&M plated a pair of runs in the top of the third. In the bottom of the fourth, Jeb Byerley singled to score Conner Butler as Roanoke would cut the deficit in half.
  • The Diplomats scored in the top of the fifth before a Roanoke response. Jack Carpin doubled to left to send PK Cocolis across the plate to make it a 3-2 game.
  • The sixth would prove to be the undoing for the Maroons as Franklin & Marshall would see four players cross the plate.
  • Roanoke would have more good chance to get back into the game in the bottom of the seventh. Will Smith walked and advanced to third on a Mason Staz single to right field. Jonny Wall laced a base right to right to score Smith. Cocolis walked to load the bases and Roanoke made it 7-4 on a Butler sacrifice fly. Owen Lawn received a free pass to load the bases for a pinch hitter. The Diplomats recorded a much-needed strikeout and held on for the 8-4 win.
  • Staz was the only Maroon with more than one hit, going 2-5 with a run scored. Wall was 1-1 with a trio of base on balls and Smith finished 1-2 with three walks and a run scored. Brandon Hill received the start and gave up two runs, only one earned, while suffering his second loss of the season, giving up four hits and recording five punchouts.

Up next: Roanoke travels to Pfeiffer for a mid-week game on Wednesday afternoon.
