Lynchburg Hands Emory Women's Soccer First Loss of Season

The #24/11 ranked Emory University women's soccer team saw its eight-game unbeaten streak snapped Sunday afternoon, falling to the University of Lynchburg 2-1 at Richard Barry Park in Charlotte, NC.

The loss is the first for the Eagles during the 2021 season, dropping to 7-1-1. For the Hornets, it's their fifth straight victory as they moved to 5-1 overall. Emory also saw its six-game scoreless streak end, surrendering scores for the first time in seven games, tied for the fourth-longest shutout stretch in team history.

Lynchburg's Alyssa Damato scored with three seconds remaining in the first half to send the Hornets into the break up a goal. With ten seconds showing on the clock, the Hornets' Victoria Newman picked up the ball for a throw-in near Lynchburg's bench. She found herself with the ball quickly after playing the ball inbounds and set up Damato for a goal right before the halftime whistle.

Shortly into the second half, Lynchburg again found the back of the net as Averey Wyscarver buried a goal following a long pass from teammate Amanda Wigboldy in the 48th minute.

Emory applied heavy pressure in the final half and out-possessed Lynchburg the rest of the way. The Eagles took eight shots after Wyscarver's tally and finally broke through as senior Brooke Tylka scored off a long set play at the 73:41 mark with Kylie Hall picking up the assist.

However, Lynchburg's Jade Lecklider continued her strong play in goal and made six saves overall, including two clutch denials with less than four minutes left in the contest on shot attempts by sophomore Olivia Friedman and senior Lily Dresner. Senior Emma Platt took the loss for the Eagles, despite tying a season-high with five saves.

University Athletic Association play is up next for the Eagles as they will host No.-9 University of Chicago next Saturday, October 2, in Atlanta. Opening touch is set for 11:00 AM.
