Box Score

Mount Berry, GA - One day after suffering their first loss in a season opener under Head Coach Stephen Andrew, the Lady Lions responded in a big way posting five goals in a complete victory over Guilford College in the Winshape Invitational hosted by Berry College.  Playing their second game in as many days at the tourney, PC controlled the tempo early getting goals from four different Lady Lions on the afternoon.

Piedmont outshot the Quakers 29-2 on the day holding a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks as well creating multiple opportunities to get on the scoreboard.  PC did so in the 41st minute when senior Laura Goodwin's effort from distance got under the outstretched Guilford keeper for her first goal of the season, giving Piedmont a 1-0 lead.

Just seconds before the squads broke for the halftime intermission, Piedmont's Shayna Rogers doubled the margin blasting her own shot from just outside the 18 that clattered to the far post.  Rogers also had the assist on the first goal for PC having an all-around performance. Andrew's squad went into the halftime up 2-0 and cruising outshooting Guilford 13-2 in the opening frame.

Goodwin struck again in the second half earning her second goal of the year turning with the ball at the top of the box and curling it over the Guilford keeper.  Just 14 minutes later, junior Nikki Means would extend the lead even further putting a mishandled cross into the back of the net to push Piedmont up 4-nil.

PC's fifth and final goal of the afternoon was perhaps the exclamation on a quality performance as freshman Savannah Castles scored her first career goal emphatically heading away a cross whipped in by senior Meghan Heim.  For the veteran Heim, it was her second assist of the day as she also had the helper on Rogers' goal earlier in the match.

Getting the win in goal was senior Marjorie Hammond who went the full 90 minutes picking up one save and a shutout, the 22nd overall of her Piedmont career.  The win moves Piedmont to an even 1-1 on the season with both contests having come at the Winshape Invitational this weekend.

The Lady Lions return to action this Wednesday, September 4th as they play host to Truett-McConnell College, a local foe who makes the short trip over from Cleveland, GA.  Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm, and fans can follow the action with Live Stats on PiedmontLions.com.
