Emory & Henry Women’s Basketball Beats Eastern Mennonite, 76-61, Saturday On The Road

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Basketball Team (19-4, 13-3 ODAC) saw history made on Saturday afternoon as it defeated Eastern Mennonite University (4-18, 3-13 ODAC) by a 76-61 score in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action.

Senior forward Sydney McKinney (Big Stone Gap, Va.) recorded the second-ever triple-double in E&H Women's Basketball history, going for 16 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists. The feat was first accomplished by Angie "Flea" Simpkins '99 in a game against then-Lynchburg College in February of 1999 where she scored 14 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists.

How It Happened
- E&H jumped out to a 10-2 lead at the 7:29 mark of the opening period, extending its advantage to 20-6. EMU closed the gap to 22-12 through 10 minutes of play.
- A 10-1 run by the Wasps early in the second quarter pushed the margin to 17 (32-15), but the Royals scored eight of the final 11 points of the half to make the score 46-36 at the intermission.
- Returning to action, Emory & Henry continued to pull away, leading 67-49 after three. An 8-0 run which spanned into the early fourth frame gave the Wasps their first 20-point advantage of the night, 69-49, as they extended the gap to 23 (76-53) with 6:05 to go.
- E&H went to its bench for the remainder of the fourth, giving its starters some crucial rest and its reserves valuable experience late in the year with the postseason approaching. The Royals scored the final eight points of the contest, but the outcome was never in doubt as E&H cruised to the 76-61 victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- McKinney's triple-double came on 7-for-15 shooting as she also added a steal and a block to her tally on the afternoon.
- Senior forward Kara Stafford (Bristol, Tenn.) put up 15 points, four rebounds and two assists while senior forward Peyton Williams (Saltville, Va.) had 14 points, 12 boards, three assists and two blocks.
- Junior forward Elizabeth Jones (Wytheville, Va.) finished with 11 points and five rebounds while sophomore guard Taylor Gilbert (Abingdon, Va.) led the bench with eight points, two rebounds and two blocks.

Eastern Mennonite Individual Leaders
- Chloe Roach led the Royals with 12 points, four rebounds and two assists while Tiffany Carey had 11 points and six boards.
- Lexi Deffenbaugh put up nine points while Jade Payton had seven points, six rebounds and three assists off the bench.

A Deeper Look
- Emory & Henry shot 30-for-68 (44.1%) for the game, assisting on 22 of its buckets (73.3%), with nine makes from three-point range.
- Eastern Mennonite only managed to shoot 26.7 percent (20-of-75) for the game but made 16-of-22 (72.7%) of its free throws.
- E&H led, 53-43, on rebounding but EMU's 16 offensive boards were good for a 14-11 advantage on second-chance points.
- The Wasps posted a 36-24 margin on points in the paint.
