Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short Against EMU

jayla galbreath calls for a play during a game against eastern mennonite in 2022

MIDDLETOWN, Pa. - Penn State Harrisburg's women's basketball team battled to the buzzer in a narrow 68-66 setback against Eastern Mennonite at the Capital Union Building on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 20.

Giahny Correa led the way with a team-high 18 points and four steals, Jayla Galbreath added 13 points and three assists, and Kendis Butler was the third player to reach double digits with 10 points of her own.

With the Lions (1-3) trailing 50-42 entering the fourth quarter, Butler provided a much-needed spark with seven straight points to begin the frame. She converted a driving layup off a Jenna Montana find before knocking down a pair of free throws to draw the home team to within four. She followed it up with a straightaway 3-pointer on the next possession off an assist from Galbreath before the latter tied it up at 52-52 with a 3-ball of her own the next time up the floor.

After a forced turnover, Correa put the home team ahead for the first time with a layup off a Butler feed and Galbreath converted a pair at the foul line to make it 56-52 with 6:16 remaining. The squads traded points but three straight free throws from the Royals (3-2) put them ahead by one with 2:59 left to play.

Penn State Harrisburg answered when Butler grabbed a rebound off a missed foul shot and pushed it to Galbreath who found a wide-open Macy Carroll in front of the Lions bench. Carroll buried the triple to put the home team back in front 61-59 with 2:53 to play.

The Lions led by three with 41 seconds remaining but the Royals turned up the pressure on defense and knocked down crucial free throws during the closing stretch to pull ahead 68-66 in the final seconds. Penn State Harrisburg got off a final 3-point attempt just before time expired but it rimmed out, allowing EMU to escape with the hard-fought win.
