Pioneers Begin Season With Pair of Wins

The Alfred State Baseball team traveled to Ferrum, VA to open their season against the Ferrum Panthers and won both games of the Saturday doubleheader. The first game saw the Pioneers win 11-6 and game to was a 12-8 final.

In game 1:

The Pioneers fell behind 2-0 in the second inning when Ferrum scored two runs on aggressive baserunning and an infield hit. The Pioneers answered with 2 runs of their own in the top of the fourth courtesy of a Nick Serce double to centerfield. Alfred State piled on the runs in the 7th and 8th innings. The Pioneer bats tallied 9 runs on 7 hits in the late game rallies. The big hits came from Jack Curabba in the seventh, who came through with a 2 RBI single and a Bryson Rigsby three-run homer in the eighth. Rigsby went 2-5 with 3 RBI's in his debut for the Pioneers.

Ryan Bailey went 3 innings in his first start of the season, he allowed five hits and struck out two. 

Josh Van Bramer had a solid outing in relief, going 4 innings and only allowed 3 hits, earning the win.

Nick Serce closed the game for Alfred State, striking out three in the last two innings.

In game 2:

The Pioneers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The three runs for ASC came from a Brody Burdett 2 RBI double and a Bobby Sellers sac fly. Ferrum came back with a run in the bottom of the 1st and a five-run second inning, taking the lead 6-3. The Pioneers chipped away, eventually taking back the lead with a run in the 5thand three runs in the 7th. Back-to-back singles in the 7th from Elijah Barinas and Owen Lansing knocked in the runs for the Pioneers. Barinas went 4-5 from the dish with 3 RBI's. Lansing went 3-5 with 2 RBI's in game two. A Nick Serce three-run bomb extended the lead to 12-7 for Alfred State in the eighth. Serce went 3-4 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored in game two. 

Chris Mattoon came in relief and threw 6.2 innings of one-run ball to allow a Pioneer comeback.

Caden Fortunato had his first career appearance for the Pioneers in the 9th inning to seal the victory.

The Pioneers play again tomorrow against Ferrum. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.
