UMW Women's Basketball Tops Lynchburg, 66-57, in Season Lidlifter

Senior forward Tory Martin (Centreville, Va.) scored 13 points, and sophomore Keegan Schwab (Fairfax Station, Va.) and freshman guard Megan Baxter (Chantilly, Va.) each scored 12 to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 66-57 victory over the University of Lynchburg on Monday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles claim their season opener to improve to 1-0.

The first quarter was fast-paced and the offenses shone bright, as the Eagles outscored the Hornets, 21-17. UMW edged the guests in the second, 16-15, and the third, 12-11, before outscoring the Hornets, 17-14, in the fourth. The Eagles shot 54.6% from the floor in the first two quarters to build the lead, which grew to as many as 12 in the third quarter.

Martin went 4-10 from the floor, with one three pointer and went 4-6 from the free throw line. Schwab went 4-8 from the floor, making 3-5 three pointers and 1-2 free throws, and Baxter shot 4-6 from the floor, making 4-5 three point tries. Sophomores Jordan Carpenter (Chesterfield, Va.) and Sydney Sherman (Crozet, Va.) each had eight rebounds to lead the Eagles, while Martin and Schwab each had three assists.

The Eagles shot 42.3% from the field for the game (22-52), making 11-19 three-point attempts, and went 11-17 from the foul line. Lynchburg shot 29.8% (17-57), making 5-15 three pointers and 18-25 free throws. The Eagles held a 40-34 rebounding advantage.

Mary Washington will play in the Susquehanna Tipoff Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, facing Wesleyan College on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
