Yellow Jackets Limit Salem Offense in Win

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Randolph-Macon used three first half goals by Gabby Nelson to set the tone for a decisive 6-0 victory over Salem in the Spirits' 2019 home opener at Varsity Field on Saturday, Sept. 14.

The Yellow Jackets, who improved to 6-0 win the win, notched their first goal just 1:15 into the match when Casey Kent took advantage of a penalty kick, following a foul committed by Salem (2-3) goalkeeper Jordan Tomberlin.

Nelson scored her first of three straight goals at the 5:31 mark, driving home a shot from the left side. The senior forward stretched the Randolph-Macon advantage to 3-0, after slipping past the Spirits defensive attack for a breakaway goal at the 7:19 mark.

Nelson found the back of net for the fourth Yellow Jacket goal of the opening period at the 22-minute mark with a shot from the left side at eight yards out. Randolph Macon took a 4-0 lead into the intermission, attempting eight shots to Salem's three.

Kent, on her second goal of the contest, provided Randolph-Macon with a 5-0 lead in the match when she drove home a strike from 18 yards out at the 49:33 mark. Nicole Czyezewski sent home the final Yellow Jacket score of the afternoon at the 72:02 mark, from 18 yards away.

Salem attempted four shots on goal over the course of the match from the combination of Courtney Chaplin, Ellie Montes, Alyssa Denkovich and Amanda Rojo. Senior netminder Hannah Wagner came in reserve of Tomberlin, finishing with four saves to lead the way for the Spirits.

The Yellow Jackets finished the afternoon with 15 shots, including seven in the second half. Randolph-Macon also had three corner kicks, while the Spirits attempted two.

The Spirits return to the pitch on Tuesday, Sept. 17, when they head to Brevard for a 7 p.m. clash with their fellow USA South Conference member. For more information on Salem soccer check out www.salemspirits.com.
