The Lead: The Roanoke volleyball team took on Geneva (Pa.) in their first of two matches on the second day of the Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic in Wooster, Ohio. Roanoke was dominant in the opening set, cruising to a 25-8 win. After splitting the next two sets, The Maroons broke open a close fourth frame and closed out the Golden Tornados, 3-1, to get Day Two off to a good start.

Highlights:

  • A 12-2 kill advantage would allow Roanoke to take the opener, 25-8.
  • Roanoke carried that momentum into a second set that would once again see the Maroons double up Geneva at the net and take a 2-0 lead.
  • The Golden Tornados turned the tables on Roanoke in the third set as Geneva used 13 kills and six Maroon miscues to stay alive, 25-19.
  • Roanoke would find their groove and 14 kills later, the Maroons had won the set, 25-22, and the match 3-1.
  • Parker Moody and Kayleigh Eason led the Maroons attack with 11 kills apiece. Peyton Kirchner added eight kills and four assisted blocks while Rylee Mayer recorded one solo and five assisted blocks.
  • Olivia Newman accounted for 31 of RC's 46 assists with Kennedy Clemmer and Linsey Bailey each had 16 digs.

The Lead: In their final match of the two-day, Ginny Hunt Kilt Classic, Roanoke faced Denison. The Big Red used an advantage at the net, 34-25, and 20 Maroon miscues on their way to a 3-0 sweep of Roanoke College.

Highlights:

  • Denison used a 10-2 run to open a big lead in the opener and carried that momentum to a 25-8 first set victory.
  • In the second frame, the Maroons were once again down early. After a rally and a Logan Pasley service ace, the deficit was cut to just three, 19-16. However, the Big Red closed on a 6-1 run to take a 2-0 lead.
  • A 12-2 surge by Denison in the early stages of the set all but eliminated any sort of Roanoke comeback chances as the Maroons fell, 0-3.
  • Bailey led with eight kills while Kirchner added six. 20 assists by Newman and Clemmer recorded a team high 14 digs.

Up next: Roanoke will start conference play on Wednesday with a trip to Lexington to face Washington and Lee at 7:00pm.
