The Lead: Roanoke College traveled to Emory & Henry for their final of two non-conference matchups to start the season. The Maroons used a 15-8 run to close the third quarter to seize control and go on to a 10 point win.

How it Happened:

  • Kayla Kinsler and Kristina Harrel staked Roanoke to a 4-0 lead before E&H would score the next seven to take a three-point advantage.
  • The Wasps would hold the lead for the next five minutes before a Whitney Hopson free throw tied the game at 13-13 with just over two minutes to play in the opening frame.
  • Sayre Brandstatter connected from beyond the arc to put RC back on top, but a pair of free throws and an Alexis Hopper layup would give the home team a 17-16 edge after the first 10 minutes of play.
  • The second period would see four ties and a pair of lead changes heading into the final minute of play. Trailing, 29-27, Morgan Micallef would score a layup with just 18 seconds left on the clock, tying the game heading into the half.
  • Roanoke would score the first six points coming out of the break, forcing an Emory & Henry timeout. Kylea Cooper would score five of the Wasp's next eight and the game was once again tied at 37 apiece at the mid-way point of the third quarter.
  • From that moment on, the Maroons would out-score their hosts 15-8 and take a seven point advantage into the final 10 minutes of play.
  • E&H would get as close as five, but a three-pointer by Rose Sande followed by an Ayanna Scarborough layup and Roanoke would enjoy their first double-digit lead of the afternoon.
  • Sande would add five more points in the closing minutes to secure the non-conference, road win.
  • Four Maroons would score double figures in a game that saw eight lead changes and seven ties. Scarborough netted a team high 14 with Renee Alquiza adding 11. Micallef and Brandstatter each scored 10 while Kinsler added 10 rebounds and Micallef nine. Hopson (6) and Brandstatter (5) handed out 11 of RC's 18 assists.
  • Cooper had a game high 20 and Hopper added 15 for the Wasps.

Up next: Roanoke will continue their season opening road trip when they make the trip to Ashland to face the defending Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) champions from Randolph-Macon. The game with the Yellow Jackets is scheduled to tip on Tuesday night at 6pm and will be the first ODAC game of the year for the Maroons.
