Eagles’ Kendall, R-MC’s Keeler, GC’s Smith also Honored
FOREST, Va. --- Bridgewater College outfielder
Nick Fulk and Lynchburg College righty Martin Henderlite highlight
the 2013 ODAC Baseball All-Conference awards as the ODAC Player and
Pitcher of the Year, respectively. Eagles’ mentor Curt
Kendall was tabbed the ODAC Coach of the Year, while Randolph-Macon
College designated hitter Mitchell Keeler earned ODAC Rookie of the
Year laurels. Guilford College outfielder John Macon Smith
received the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award in a
vote of the league’s sports information directors.
Fulk, a junior from Fulks Run, Va., ranks in the top five in the
ODAC in several offensive categories. He tops the conference
in hits (64) and runs scored (43), while placing second in stolen
bases (18). His four triples and 88 total bases are third in
the league, while his .403 batting average ranks fourth. Fulk
recorded at least one hit in 34-of-37 games played, starting the
season with a 22-game hitting streak that dated back to the final
two contests of the 2011 season. He had 16 multi-hit games,
including a season personal-best four knocks in the second game of
a double-header against Virginia Wesleyan in early March.
Henderlite, a sophomore from Roanoke, Va., made the most of his
ODAC-best 11 starts by leading the conference with eight victories
and a 1.12 earned run average. He surrendered just nine
earned runs and 51 hits in a 72.0 innings of work. He fanned
55 and walked 22 while posting a .198 batting average against,
which ranks eighth in the league. Henderlite’s numbers
were even better against conference foes as he posted ODAC-bests of
five wins and a 0.94 ERA in seven starts. He posted one
complete shutout on the season overall as he gave up just two hits
and struck out nine in blanking York College (Pa.).
Kendall, in his 28th season guiding the Eagles’
baseball program, helped lead Bridgewater to the top seed in the
2013 ODAC Baseball Tournament as the program looks to increase its
ODAC record 13 titles. Bridgewater has won 11 conference
crowns with Kendall holding the reins. Already the most
victorious NCAA Division III coach in the state of Virginia,
Kendall entered this year’s ODAC Tournament having won 654
career games.
Keeler, a freshman from Mechanicsville, Va., made an immediate
impact in Randolph-Macon’s lineup, serving as the Yellow
Jackets lead-off hitter and earned All-ODAC First Team
accolades. He has excelled at exactly what lead-off hitters
should, topping the ODAC charts with a .504 on-base
percentage. He is second in the league with 22 walks, while
ranking third in slugging percentage (.663) powered by 16
extra-base hits. He’s hit safely in 20-of-25 games
played with 14 multi-hit outings that includes a 5-for-5 day in
which he drove in six runs and hit for the cycle in a win over
Hampden-Sydney in mid-March.
Smith, a junior from Greensboro, N.C., stars both on and off the
field for Guilford. In the classroom, the Accounting major
boasts a 3.70 grade point average. He has been honored on
Guilford’s Dean’s List as well as a three-time
selection on the Guilford Student-Athlete Honor Roll. On the
field, Smith is third in the ODAC with 58 hits towards a .392
batting average, which ranks sixth in the conference.
He’s collected 33 RBI, which is eighth in the league, and has
swiped an ODAC fifth-best 13 bases. Smith hit safely in
31-of-36 games played and will enter 2014 riding an eight-game
hitting streak. An All-ODAC First Teamer this year, Smith
collected 19 multi-hit games including a pair of four-hit
outings.
