W&L's Jones and Concklin, H-SC's Goodwyn Take Home Major Honors
FOREST, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College took home two major honors as part of the All-ODAC Baseball awards, with third baseman Travis Lodge garnering ODAC Player of the Year accolades and lefty James Walsh securing ODAC Pitcher of the Year laurels. Washington and Lee University's Lucas Jones earned ODAC Coach of the Year recognition, while Generals' pitcher Tom Concklin received the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete award. Hampden-Sydney College outfielder Brian Goodwyn was tabbed the ODAC Rookie of the Year.
Less than a quarter of this season's standout pool earned repeat honors as 31 new faces dot the list compared to last year's all-conference selections. Of the 10 consecutive honorees, five are a part of the All-ODAC First Team. Walsh and fellow Yellow Jacket teammate Rick Spiers were first team choices last season. They are joined by a third from R-MC in designated hitter Nick Maiolo, who made the jump from the All-ODAC Third Team. Virginia Wesleyan College catcher C.J. Lindsay made the same leap as Maiolo, while Lynchburg College second baseman Joe Tomasulo moved up from the All-ODAC Second Team.
Lodge, a senior from Chesterfield, Va., has been an offensive juggernaut all season. He leads the ODAC in batting (.482), on-base percentage (.582) and slugging percentage (.955). He's hit a league best 12 homeruns towards a conference-high 105 total bases. He's fourth in runs batted in with 41, as well as walks with 23. He has hit safely in 27-of-31 games played with 15 multi-hit outings. He enters the ODAC postseason on a 10-game hitting streak. He is 23-for-47 (.489) during that span.
Walsh, a senior from Mechanicsville, Va., is currently 9-0 overall with six of those victories coming against ODAC foes. His 82 strikeouts rank second in the league, while his 53 K's against league competition tops all hurlers. He owns a 1.82 earned run average in 74.1 innings of work overall, ranking fourth and third in the conference. Those numbers look even better in ODAC starts as his ERA sits at 1.44 in 56.1 frames in conference games. Walsh registered three double-digit strikeout performances, including 10 punchouts in his most recent start. He has won six of his past seven starts with three scoreless outings.
Jones is in the midst of his first season guiding the Generals' baseball program after taking over for longtime mentor Jeff Stickley. Jones has his squad poised near the top of the ODAC standings, finishing third with a 13-7 league mark to lock up the #3 seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament. The Generals' 25-12 overall record is a 17-win improvement over last year's final mark.
Goodwyn, a sophomore from Chester, Va., adds this honor to an All-ODAC Second Team selection. After missing all of last season with injury, Goodwyn currently sits seventh in batting at .379 in his first season against collegiate pitching. He leads the ODAC with 23 stolen bases and is third with 58 hits. He enters ODAC tourney weekend on a five-game hitting streak as he's collected nine hits in his last 20 (.450) at bats.
Concklin, a junior from Hinsdale, Ill., maintains a 3.429 grade point average as an Economics major at Washington and Lee. Twice he has been honored on the All-ODAC Academic Team, with a third honor likely following the 2015-16 campaign. On the hill, Concklin is 7-0 with an ODAC-best 1.04 earned run average in 69.1 innings, the fourth most in the league. He has fanned 54 batters and walked just 10. The opposition is hitting .198 off him. Before a no-decision in his last outing, Concklin had won six straight starts covering 43.1 innings. He allowed just five earned runs during that span, good enough for a 1.04 ERA.
