Selby Goes the Distance in R-MC's Baseball Regional Opening Win

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. --- Junior Colin Selby (Chesapeake, Va./Western Branch) hurled a complete game with 10 strikeouts as the top-seeded Randolph-Macon baseball team edged sixth-seeded LaGrange 2-1 Thursday afternoon in Game 1 of the Holly Springs Regional.

The Yellow Jackets (32-7-1) will face the loser of the game between #3 Denison and #4 Christopher Newport on Friday at 3 p.m. The Panthers (28-17) will face the loser of #2 TCNJ vs. #5 Alvernia at 11 a.m. on Friday.

Selby (11-2) scattered eight hits and allowed three walks and one unearned run. He recorded the first complete game for the R-MC pitching staff this season. Selby registered his fifth double-figure strikeout game this season. He leads the nation in strikeouts with 122, which is a program record. Selby is the first Yellow Jacket to earn 11 wins in a season.

Junior Jeff Butler (Chesapeake, Va/Western Branch) led the R-MC offense, going 2 for 5 with a double and two RBI.

The game was scoreless through the first four innings. After LC plated one in the top of the fifth, R-MC answered in the bottom of the frame. Sophomore Ryan Duphorn (Erial, N.J./Paul VI) reached on an infield single with one away and moved to second on a throwing error. Butler laced a double down the left field line to drive in Duphorn, tying the game at 1-1. Butler moved to third on a flyout to center and looked to score the go-ahead run on a bunt by senior Rick Spiers (South Chesterfield, Va./Matoaca), but Spiers was called out at first to leave it at 1-1.

The Yellow Jackets broke the deadlock in the bottom of the seventh. Sophomore Zach Evans (Fort Mill, S.C./Seneca) had a leadoff double and moved to third when Duphorn grounded out to second. Evans scored on a single to center by Butler to give R-MC a 2-1 advantage.

Tuzzolo and Evans both had two hits for the Yellow Jackets, who stranded 12. The Panthers left nine on base.
