Wooster Rallies Past Shenandoah in NCAA Regional Baseball Matchup

ADRIAN, Mich. --- No. 16 Shenandoah University was sent into the elimination bracket of the Adrian Regional Friday evening with a 13-5 loss to No. 4 Wooster (Ohio). Shenandoah (35-11) lost for the first time in nine games as the Scots (38-8) rallied thanks to a four-run sixth.

SU, with two runs in the second and two more in the third, led 4-1 and chased Wooster starter Nanak Saran, but could not keep the Scots' bats in check. Wooster, which came into the game hitting .355 as a team, banged out 12 hits and scored a combined eight runs in the fourth thru seventh innings to turn that 4-1 deficit into a 9-4 lead.

Hornets starter Robert Klinchock (6-4) took the loss after allowing six runs on nine hits and two walks in 5.0 innings of work. Chase Smallwood had two of his squad's RBIs – he drove in Shenandoah's first run with a groundout in the second and the third run with a single up the middle one inning later. Henry Delavergne and Nick Goode also drove in runs with Delavergne plating Goode on a single to center in the second and Goode bringing home Smallwood on a double to right center in the third.

Wooster scored its final four runs, in the ninth, without the benefit of a hit.

"We had a 4-1 lead and had chances to expand that lead," Hornets coach Kevin Anderson said. "We did not to that (add to the lead) and that can't happen against a good team. Wooster banged all the ball all over the yard, and combined with walks on the mound and defensive mistakes, didn't allow us to get back into the game."

Smallwood finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and Delavergne 2-for-2 with the RBI.

The loss puts Shenandoah into a 12:15 p.m.. Saturday afternoon versus sixth-seeded Ithaca (N.Y.). The Bombers eliminated second-seeded Otterbein with 5-4 win in 12 innings Friday afternoon after dropping their opening game Thursday to La Roche (Pa.). A win Saturday afternoon puts SU into a 7:45 game Saturday night.
