Lynchburg Joins Shenandoah in Division III Baseball Tournament Field

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. --- Two teams will carry the ODAC banner into the NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament following the field announcement on NCAA.com on Monday afternoon. Shenandoah University, fresh off hoisting its fourth ODAC trophy to claim the league's automatic bid to the national field, will be joined by at-large selection University of Lynchburg in the 60-team field.

Like SU, 41 squads received automatic qualification from their respective conferences. One school earned a "Pool B" bid as an independent team or squad that competes in a league that does not feature automatic NCAA qualification. The remaining 18 teams received at-large bids from "Pool C," which includes all teams that did not receive AQ or Pool B entries. It is from the latter pool that Lynchburg earned its selection from the Division III Baseball Championship Committee.

Both Shenandoah (34-10-1) and Lynchburg (35-1) appear on the same side of the bracket, but they appear in separate sections of the lower-left quadrant. Both will also host four-team regional pods.

Shenandoah welcomes teams in its regional Bridgeforth Field in Jim Barnett Park, which features an artificial playing surface. The Hornets will square off with St. Joseph's University-Long Island in their opening matchup. The Golden Eagles (24-12) won the Skyline Conference championship. The two teams in the pod and playing against each other in the first round are Catholic University and Stevens Institute of Technology. The Cardinals (29-12) and Ducks (29-14) both received at-large bids after coming up short in the Landmark Conference and MAC Freedom championships, respectively.

Lynchburg will host its four-team regional at Bank of the James Stadium, home of the Lynchburg Hillcats baseball club. The Hornets' first opponent will be Salve Regina University. The Seahawks (28-11-2) were an at-large pick after falling prior to the championship game in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament. Birmingham-Southern College and Earlham College will meet in the other first round matchup in the Hill City. The Panthers (38-8) won the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) crown, while the Quakers (26-11) claimed the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) trophy.

Tournament play kicks off with regional action on May 19-22 in either one of 14 four-team double-elimination regionals or two two-team best-of-five series. The 16 advancing teams will meet in eight super regionals, which feature a best-of-three series format. The eight super regional winners will travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for competition in the national finals. Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium will serve as the host venue for double-elimination pool play and the best-of-three series to determine the champion.
