Martin, a senior from Chesterfield, Va., hit over .500 for the week recording 11 hits in 21 at bats in the Tigers’ five games. He started off the week with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs, one RBI, a double and a stolen base against Greensboro. Two days later, he went 2-for-4 with one run, one RBI, one double and two stolen bases. He tallied two more hits on a double and a triple against Roanoke. In the Tigers’ season finale against Randolph-Macon, Martin bounced back from a 1-for-5 performance in the first game by going 3-for-3 in the second game, despite being hit in his first three at bats of the game. In the 12-8 win, Martin scored three runs while batting in three others. On the week, he scored seven runs while batting in six, hit four doubles, one triple, and stole three bases.
Baseball Player Honor Roll
Jay Thompson, Bridgewater, Junior, 3rd Base
Thompson hit safely in all four games this past week
for the Eagles, helping the team to a 3-1 record. Thompson hit .533
for the week, going 8-for-15. He was 2-for-2 with a run, run batted
in and two walks in a 4-0 victory over Ferrum. In a loss to
Catholic he was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. In a doubleheader
sweep over Guilford he was 4-for-10 in the two games with three
runs scored and one run batted in. Thompson had a .611 on-base
percentage in the four games and a .666 slugging percentage.
Jake Norman, Eastern Mennonite, Senior, 1st Base
Norman had a memorable Senior Day on Sunday, getting
7 hits in 9 at-bats as the Royals swept ODAC rival Roanoke.
Norman scored five times and knocked in another two, including
hitting his second homerun of the year. In game one against
the Maroons, he had what turned into the game-winning RBI with a
single in the third, then added some insurance with a solo blast in
the eighth inning. In the nightcap with the score tied at
7-7, Norman got a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh and
scored the walk-off, game-winning run with two outs. For the
week, Norman batted .500 and had a slugging percentage of
.714. He was also stellar defensively at first, as he handled
31 chances without an error. Norman is still a perfect
fielder for the season as well, holding a 1.000 fielding percentage
in 226 chances.
Kyle Wooden, Guilford, Senior, 1st Base
Wooden Hit .467 in the Quakers’ 1-3
week… had seven hits in 15 at-bats, including four
doubles… scored six runs… had a team high .733
slugging percentage... went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in a
league win at Emory & Henry… had two hits and two RBI in
the second game with the Wasps… Kyle is riding a 15-game
hitting streak into the ODAC Tournament.
Mike Walters, Lynchburg, Senior, Outfielder
Walters went 5-8 in the doubleheader against ODAC
opponent Emory & Henry with a triple and two RBI…Scored
one of the key runs in the first game…has a five-game
hitting streak…Finishes the regular season with a .309
batting average, 24 RBI, 28 runs and seven stolen bases.
