2011 ODAC Baseball Players of the Week

  • CHRIS MARTIN, Hampden-Sydney, Senior, Shortstop
    April 18, 2011
    Martin, a senior from Chesterfield, Va., hit over .500 for the week recording 11 hits in 21 at bats in the Tigers’ five games. He started off the week with a 3-for-4 performance with three runs, one RBI, a double and a stolen base against Greensboro. Two days later, he went 2-for-4 with one run, one RBI, one double and two stolen bases. He tallied two more hits on a double and a triple against Roanoke. In the Tigers’ season finale against Randolph-Macon, Martin bounced back from a 1-for-5 performance in the first game by going 3-for-3 in the second game, despite being hit in his first three at bats of the game. In the 12-8 win, Martin scored three runs while batting in three others. On the week, he scored seven runs while batting in six, hit four doubles, one triple, and stole three bases.

    Richter, a junior from Perkasie, Pa., threw his second straight complete game victory on Sunday as he completed his ODAC-leading fourth complete game. He allowed just one earned run and struck out 11 batters in a 9-2 win over Roanoke. The 11 strikeouts are a career high as the junior has lowered his ERA by 1.30 over his past two games. Richter finishes his season with career bests in most pitching categories. He also leads the ODAC in complete games, innings pitched and starts, and is tied for the league-lead with 58 strikeouts.
  • MARK MANTHE, Roanoke, Sophomore, Infielder

    Manthe, a sophomore from Blacksburg, Va., batted .529 (9-for-17) with three doubles and eight runs batted in as he led the Maroons to a 3-1 record last week. He also scored five runs, walked twice and stole a base. Manthe went a career-high 4-for-5 with three runs, a double and five RBI in the first game of a split series against Emory & Henry. He followed that with a pair of two-baggers as part of a 3-for-4 day with two RBI in a win over Virginia Intermont. For the season, Manthe leads Roanoke with several offensive categories including batting avereage (.304), hits (34), runs (17), doubles (11), homers (3) and RBI (24).

    James, a sophomore from Greenville, N.C., joins senior teammate Sammy Stuart as Guilford winners of the ODAC’s weekly pitching honor this season. The right-hander was 1-0 with a 1.38 ERA in three appearances last week. James threw four scoreless innings in relief over two weekday contests before posting his first career complete game in the Quakers’ 4-2 win at ODAC-foe Randolph-Macon College Saturday. He scattered eight hits and fanned four in his team-leading third victory of the season. James is 3-3 this year with a 4.40 ERA in a club-high 15 appearances. In addition to wins and appearances, he leads the Quakers in innings (47) and strikeouts (28). James is 3-0 with a 3.13 ERA and 15 strikeouts in six ODAC games.
  • C.J. THOMPSON, Washington and Lee, Junior, Outfielder

    Thompson, a junior from Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., helped lead W&L to a 3-1 week, including a win over ODAC-leading Bridgewater and a split with Randolph-Macon, by hitting .692 (9-of-13) with four RBIs, five runs scored and five extra-base hits. Thompson started his week with a pinch-hit home run to leadd off the top of the ninth inning in W&L’s 4-2 road win at Eastern Mennonite. His hot hitting continued with a 2-for-4 effort in the Generals win over Bridgewater. Thompson was 4-for-4 with a double, two triples, two RBIs and two runs scored in a 14-8 loss in game-one against Randolph-Macon. He followed that up with two more hits, including his second double of the week, and a run scored in the eight-inning nightcap win against the Yellow Jackets. Thompson raised his batting average 137 points, from .219 to .356, over the last week.

    Morgan, a senior from Bedford, Va., fired a complete game five-hitter in helping the Hornets to a 5-1 victory over ODAC-rival Roanoke. In nine innings on the bump, Morgan fanned five Maroons and walked a pair, surrendering just one unearned run. So far this season, Morgan has collected five wins without a loss, while also registering three scoreless outings.
  • JORDAN WALTON, Randolph-Macon, Junior, 1st Base

    Walton, a junior from Mechanicsville, Va., highlighted the Randolph-Macon offense last week, going 12-for-23 (.521) at the dish with six doubles, a homerun and 11 RBI over the Yellow Jackets five contests. Walton is currently riding a seven-game hitting streak and has also doubled in five consecutive games. Against Maryville on Thursday, the senior first baseman put the Jackets in the lead for good with a grand slam in the fifth inning. Walton also added two doubles and walk to finish the game 3-for-5, having reached base in 4-of-6 plate appearances.

    Laswell, a senior from Houston, Texas, tossed his second complete game in as many starts on Saturday. He picked up the win in W&L’s 3-2 come-from-behind win over Hampden-Sydney. Laswell, who took a no hitter into the sixth, limited the Tigers to two runs on three hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts. On the season, he is 3-1 in 11 appearances (4 starts) and has recorded 41 strikeouts to just seven walks.
  • JONATHAN MASON, Bridgewater, Sophomore, Outfielder

    Mason, a sophomore from Sterling, Va., carried the BC offense this past week as the Eagles finished with a 3-1 record, 3-0 in the conference. Mason was 3-for-4 with a pair of homers and five RBI in a 10-1 win over EMU. A day later he was 2-for-3 with two more homers and three RBI in a 13-12 loss to nationally-ranked Shenandoah. In a doubleheader sweep over Randolph-Macon, Mason was 6-for-10 with five RBI and a pair of doubles. For the week, Mason finished with a .647 batting average (11-for-17) with six runs scored, 13 RBI, four homers and two doubles. He had an on-base percentage of .700 and a slugging percentage of 1.470.

    Davis a junior from McLean, Va., tossed a complete-game shutout in a 5-0 win over No. 17 Tufts. He allowed just six singles, did not walk a batter and struck out five in finishing his first complete game to improve to 2-1 on the season. He lowered his earned run average to 6.17 following his best outing of the season.

    Wooden, a senior from Stillwell, Kan., went 8-for-9 with four doubles and a homer in Guilford’s weekend sweep of Hampden-Sydney College. His performance came in his first two games after being sidelined for three weeks with a toe injury. The former NCAA Division III batting championship hit a two-run homer in his first at-bat of the weekend. He posted a .909 on-base percentage over the two games, reaching base in 10 of his 11 trips to the plate. Wooden racked up 15 total bases, six RBI,and had a 1.667 slugging percentage.

    Chandler, a junior from Waynesboro, Va., pitched 8.1 innings to lead the Eagles to a 5-2 ODAC victory over Va. Wesleyan. Chandler scattered nine hits and allowed two runs. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. He also pitched three innings in relief against Thomas More College and allowed one earned run on three hits. He struck out four and walked two.
  • SHAYNE PASKANIK, Virginia Wesleyan, Junior, Outfielder

    Paskanik, a junior from Fredericksburg, Va., turned in an outstanding effort in a VWC sweep at Eastern Mennonite University. He was 5-for-5 in the opener, including a double and home run, the latter his second of the season. He followed that with a 2-for-4 showing in the second game to complete a three-game weekend with a .667 batting average. Paskanik ranks second among VWC hitters currently with a .407 batting average. He leads the Marlins with 22 hits.

    Lucas, a sophomore from Waynesboro, Va., picks up his second weekly honor of the season. Lucas pitched a nine-inning complete game shutout in a victory over Hampden-Sydney on Saturday. He struck out eight and walked just one while surrendering only three hits in his time on the bump. He is now 2-2 on the season with a 2.33 ERA.

    Clifton, a freshman from Vinton, Va., led the Maroons to four victories last week, including a three-game sweep of Southern Vermont over the weekend. Clifton had a hit in each of RC's five games, racking up a trio of multi-hit efforts. His best outing came in the week's final contest when Clifton went 3-for-5 with two runs scored, a pair of doubles, a homer and three runs batted in. For the week, he hit .474 (9-for-19) with six runs, four doubles, a homer and seven RBI.
  • MICHAEL HASLAM, Roanoke, Sophomore, Pitcher

    Haslam, a sophomore from Collegeville, Pa., went 2-0 last week, posting a complete-game victory against Southern Vermont and a two-inning relief stint for the win against Maine-Presque Isle. Against Southern Vermont, Haslam allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and fanning nine over seven innings. Earlier in the week, he worked two scoreless innings to earn the win against M-PI. He gave up one hit and struck out two.
  • JAY THOMPSON, Bridgewater, Junior, Third Base

    Thompson, a junior from Waynesboro, Va., had a big weekend on the road as the Eagles split a pair of contest against quality competition. Against Cortland St., 2010 D-III runner-up and preseason No. 2 in the nation, Thompson was 4-for-5 with a double, three runs scored and one RBI to help lead the Eagles to a 15-14 victory. In a loss to CNU, Thompson was 3-for-4 with two homers, two runs scored and three RBIs. For the weekend, his batting average was .777 with a slugging percentage of 1.555.

    Stuart, a senior from Monroe, N.C., threw four scoreless innings of two-hit ball out of the bullpen leading Guilford to a 9-8 win over Greensboro College. His efforts allowed the to post the comeback win in the final few innings. Stuart struck out three batters, stranded five runners on base and held the Pride to a .182 batting average. He also fanned three hitters. Stuart has the team’s top ERA at 3.65 so far this season.
  • JACOB PIERCE, Virginia Wesleyan, Sophomore, Catcher

    Pierce, a sophomore from Chesapeake, Va., made his VWC debut an impressive one, belting a pair of home runs to help the Marlins to a season-opening 12-2 victory over host Averett Unviersity. He hit for a .600 clip in the doubleheader, as the Marlins completed the sweep with a 9-2 win in the second game. Pierce hit 2-for-3, driving in four runs in the first game, and 1-for-2 in the second game. He also walked three times (twice in the second game), having reached based in six-of-eight plate appearances to open the season. He also had five putouts and four assists in the field.

    Lucas, a sophomore from Waynesboro, Va., threw six no-hit innings in his first start of the season to stake the Eagles to a 4-0 win over N.C. Wesleyan. Removed after 92 pitches, Lucas fanned two batters and walked a pair in earning his first victory of the year.
