Three teams came into Saturday's contests with undefeated ODAC
records, but just one came out that way as Guilford College stands
atop the conference table after its 28-21 win over Randolph-Macon
College. Shenandoah University handed Hampden-Sydney College
its first ODAC defeat with a 36-35 last-minute victory. Emory
& Henry College outlasted Catholic University, 17-15, to notch
its first league win of the year. Washington and Lee
University returned to the winner's circle with a 42-13 decision
over Bridgewater College.
Guilford's win on Saturday improved the squad to 4-0 in ODAC play
for the first time in program history, leaving them alone atop the
ODAC standings with H-SC set to come to Greensboro next weekend.
GC got a big passing day from Matt Pawlowski as he threw for
394 yards and four touchdowns against one interception on 21-of-29
passing. Adam Smith was his favorite target as he hauled in
seven passes for 226 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Schow
had his string of six straight games over 100 yards rushing
snapped, although he did gain 71 yards to increase his season total
to 886 and remain second in the conference. R-MC's Will
McGhee is the ODAC's leading rusher, and he added to that with 250
yards on 38 carries, which included a 54-yard touchdown run.
He now has 1,257 yards and 13 total touchdowns (12 rushing)
thru seven games, all ODAC highs.
Shenandoah trailed by 19-0 early in the game and 19-7 at the half,
but the Hornets drew level at 28-all with 4:17 to play and then
again came back from a 35-28 deficit with a Drew Ferguson to Qlyl
Middeljin TD pass with 47-seconds to play. Andrew Smith
(pictured), the ODAC Offensive Player of the Week, notched the
game-winning two-point rush. Smith racked up an ODAC
season-best 357 all-purpose yards with 152 and two touchdowns
rushing, 95 and a score receving and 110 on kickoff returns.
Ferguson threw two TD passes and ran in a score. Byron
Mitchell blocked his second punt of the year, recovering this one
at the 1-yard line to set up a 3rd quarter TD for SU. H-SC
was led by Nash Nance, who threw for 328 yards and two scores while
recording one of three Tigers' rushing touchdowns. Holton
Walker and Joey Druhan caught the TD passes, while Brady Macko and
Chris Shembo ran in scores.
Emory & Henry overcame three turnovers in turning back
Catholic in Washington, D.C. Kyle Boden threw a touchdown
pass and Joe Vaughn ran for 83 yards to lead the offense.
Lucas Kirby caught the score from Boden, and Jonathan
Turpin's five-yard TD run proved the ultimate difference in scoring
as the E&H defense denied CUA a two-point conversion with
11-seconds to play, then blocked the would-be game-winning field
goal after the Cardinals recovered the onside kick. It was
one of two field goal blocks on the day for E&H. Paul
Forney led the Wasps' defense with 12 stops. Running back
Mike Pitsenberger led CUA's offense with 96 yards and touchdown on
the ground. TJ Tutone threw a 40-yard TD pass for CUA's final
score in the game's final seconds. R.J. Allison and Rob
Martello led the defense with six tackles each.
Washington and Lee intercepted Bridgewater quarterbacks five times
in leveling its league record at 2-2. Peter Partee, the ODAC
Defensive Player of the Week, notched two of those interceptions,
including one at the outset of the fourth quarter that led to a
touchdown four plays later and transformed the game from a
one-possession to a two-score contest. Christian Cranford,
Walter Ramsey and Jeff Schulte intercepted passes, the latter of
which was returned 40 yards for a touchdown to cap the game's
scoring. Marshall Hollerith led the Generals' offense with 93
yards rushing and three TDs. BC quarterback Willie Logan
notched the Eagles' touchdown as part of a team-best 76 yards
rushing. Chandler DeHaven hit two field goals (36 and 23
yards). Andrew Palmer led the defense with 13 tackles, while
Sammy Coleman intercepted a pass for the second straight week.
