FOREST, Va. --- Randolph-Macon College took home three special honors as part of the annual All-ODAC Football Awards, as selected the league's head coaches. Running back Tre Frederick was tabbed the J. Stokeley Fulton Offensive Player of the Year, while defensive lineman Cole Burdette was named the Lou Wacker Defensive Player of the Year. Yellow Jackets' mentor Pedro Arruza received ODAC Coach of the Year laurels. Guilford College wide receiver Tyriek Russell picked up ODAC Rookie of the Year plaudits, while Washington and Lee University linebacker Max Garrett was chosen the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete.

There are plenty of new faces on this season's awards lists, with just 28 repeat honorees from last season. The bulk of those do appear on the All-ODAC First Team with 16 standouts having received All-ODAC recognition a season ago. Randolph-Macon returns Xavier Strothers (DL) and Eric Long (S) to the first team while Eric Hoy (APB) and Logan O'Neill (LB) make the jump from the All-ODAC Second Team. Emory & Henry stars McFarland Murph (OL) and Tre'von Lightfoot (DB) are back on the first team, with teammate Rhasheen Williams (LB) making a two-team leap from the All-ODAC Third Team. 

Guilford and Washington and Lee also feature a trio of repeat first team selections. The Quakers are represented by Ty Shwallon (OL), Gibson Ziah (DL), and Hunter Hoots (LB), while the Generals boast Michael LaSala (OL), Chris Osier (OL), and Garrett (LB). Bridgewater returns Keith Jennings (TE) to the league's top list, with Shenandoah's Cedrick Delaney (RB) joining him on the offensive side of the ball. Hampden-Sydney's Jordan Chalkley (P) moved up from the second team last season.

Frederick, a sophomore from Angier, N.C., led the ODAC in just about all rushing categories in his first season as the Yellow Jackets feature back. Frederick carried the ball 272 times for 1,387 yards and 11 touchdowns, all of which led the ODAC. He registered seven 100-yard rushing games, which includes a pair of 200-yard efforts. He rushed for a season and career-best 236 yards on 43 carries in a 24-19 win at Shenandoah University. He had two touchdowns in that game, marking one of four two-touchdown outings on the season. Frederick opened the season with four straight 100-yard efforts, having burst on the scene with 177 yards in the season-opener at Dickinson College. In that game, he sprinted for a 95-yard touchdown as the longest run from scrimmage in 2016.

Burdette, a senior from Frederick, Md., spearheaded a Randolph-Macon defense that allowed just 14.3 points per game, 301.5 total yards per contest, and 71.6 rushing yards per game. Each of those totals led the ODAC by wide margins. R-MC tied for the league lead in sacks with 34. Burdette was responsible for 9.5 sacks, good for third in the league. The 62 yards those cost opposing offenses ranked second. He finished the season third in the ODAC in tackles for a loss with 18.0, having set the opposition back 86 total yards. He racked up 51 total tackles with 33 as solo stops. Burdette's best outing came against Guilford in which he made 11 tackles with 3.0 for a loss and 2.0 sacks.

Arruza just completed his 13th season guiding the Yellow Jackets football program. This is his second ODAC top coaching honor, pairing this award with the one he earned in 2008. Arruza led Randolph-Macon to a 9-2 overall record that included a 6-1 mark in league play. That clinched the outright ODAC title, the 10th in program history and first since 2008. R-MC traveled to Johns Hopkins University in the NCAA Division III Football Tournament first round, falling to the Blue Jays, 42-21. Arruza owns current records of 74-58 (.561) overall and 45-38 (.542) in conference play.

Russell, a freshman from Durham, N.C., immediate stepped in to Guilford's offense and proved he'd be a force in the conference, picking up All-ODAC Second Team honors this seaosn. He led the ODAC with 79 receptions covering 862 yards, which slotted second in the final tables. He scored three touchdowns, all of which came against league opponents. He had three 100-yard receiving games, including a 9-catch 175-yard performance at Shenandoah. Russell registered an early career-high 15 catches for 136 yards in a 30-28 win at Averett.

Garrett, a junior from Fairfield, Conn., starred both on and off the field for the Generals. In the classroom, Garrett maintains a 3.932 grade point average as an Accounting and Business Administration double major. He is a two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree, having picked up two appointments to the All-ODAC Academic Team and the Washington and Lee Dean's List. On the field, Garrett is now a two-time All-ODAC First Team selection, picking up those two honors in 2015 and 2016. He led the ODAC with 109 total tackles with a league-topping 59 assisted stops. He finished with 3.0 tackles for a loss. Garrett registered one interception and broke up three other passes. He recorded eight games of double figure tackles, twice notching 15 tackles as his season-high.
