2022 Football Players of the Week

  • Aaron Nice, Bridgewater, Fy., Linebacker
    November 13, 2022
Nice, a first-year from Stuarts Draft, Va., put together the most prolific pass-rushing day in ODAC history in the Eagles regular season-ending 64-22 victory at Guilford on Saturday. Nice, who made 10 tackles on the day with seven solo stops, terrorized the Quakers quarterback with 6.5 sacks that cost them 55 yards of total offense. The 6.5 sacks are a new ODAC single-game record and ranks as not only the most in Division III this season, but that total is the third-most in Division history since the NCAA started recording single-game sack figures in 2000. Only Kevin McNamara from Saint John's University (Minn.) with 7.5 against Monmouth College (Ill.) in 2005 and Matt Harris from Gallaudet University with 7.0 against Becker College in 2011 rank higher. In the ODAC record book, Nice's output tops the 6.0 sacks posted by Rich Hilt from Hampden-Sydney against Washington and Lee in 1987 and 6.0 sacks registered by Jack Miscall from Randolph-Macon against W&L in 1992. Nice now leads the ODAC with 10.0 sacks on the season, costing opponents 83 yards of offense. He has made 49 stops overall with 30 solo tackles and 12.0 TFLs with one forced fumble.
  • Steven Hugney, Shenandoah, So., Quarterback
    November 13, 2022
Hugney, a sophomore from Fairfax Station, Va., had a hand in all three scores for Shenandoah in the Hornets 16-14 triple-overtime victory at Washington and Lee to close out the regular season. Hugney was 29-for-52 passing for 228 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a touchdown pass on a "Philly Special" style play and ran in the deciding two point conversion on SU's possession in the third extra frame. On the two-point play, Hugney rolled right after play fake, spun out of an open-field tackle attempt at the 10-yard line, and beat two defenders to the goal-line for the winning points. Hugney's touchdown pass tied the game with 40-seconds left in regulation. The play covered five yards when Andre Jackson hauled in a post-slant from Hugney to knot the score at 14-all and cap a 12-play 75-yard drive that covered 2:14 of game time. Hugney's touchdown reception to cut W&L's lead to 14-7 at the outset of the fourth quarter came on a two-tiered misdirection play. With Hugney seemingly communicating with the offensive line, the snap went directly to running back Rashadeen Byrd, Jr. He rolled left and pitched the ball to Bryar Wheeler coming on an end-around, who stopped and lobbed a pass to Hugney in the right side of the end zone. For the season, Hugney has thrown for 2,147 yards and 19 touchdowns on 186-of-313 passing. This was his first reception and fifth non-passing touchdown of the year.
  • Tristian Bailey, Guilford, Fy., Defensive Back
    November 06, 2022
Bailey, a first-year from Statesville, N.C., played a big part in Guilford shutting out Averett to snap the Quakers 18-game skid against conference opponents. Bailey, who made four solo tackles on the day, intercepted a pair of passes and returned one to the house for a pick-six. That takeaway-turned-touchdown came late in the third quarter when he stepped in front of a would-be receiver to intercept the pass. He then galloped 28-yards to pay-dirt for the game's final score in Guilfod's 26-0 victory. Bailey later added another interception in the fourth quarter, stopping a Cougars drive as they crossed into Quaker territory. For the season, Bailey has registerd 25 tackles with 23 solo efforts. He has intercepted three passes, tied for second in the league.
  • Jaylen Wood, Bridgewater, Jr., Quarterback
    November 06, 2022
Wood, a junior from Moseley, Va., helped Bridgewater to a 13-6 victory over Washington and Lee to keep the Eagles in solo second in the ODAC at 9-1 overall and 5-1 in league play. Wood played a part in both of Bridgewater's touchdowns, both coming via the passing game. He was 12-of-16 for a 75.0-percent completion percentage. He threw for 115 yards and touchdowns to Dylan Maclachlan and Freddie Watkins. Wood also ran for 44 yards on 10 carries. The Wood-to-Maclachlan touchdown covered 42 yards. Wood eluded the rush and scrambled to his right. Just before reaching the line of scrimmage, he whipped a pass to Maclachlan 20 yards down field. The receiver sprinted the rest of the way and crossed the goalline with a dive with 19-seconds on the clock before halftime. Wood hooked up with Watkins on a nine-yard run-pass option sprint out to the weak side. After faking a handoff, Wood rolled to his left and found Watkins out the out towards the sideline where he reached the ball over the line for the game's final points with 3:04 left in the third quarter. That capped a 15-play drive that covered 77 yards in 8:26. For the season, Wood has thrown for 764 yards and seven touchdowns on 69-of-108 passing. He has also run for 104 yard and a touchdown.
  • Keyshawn Wilder, Shenandoah, Jr., Defensive Back
    October 30, 2022
Wilder, a junior from Baltimore, Md., had one of the most prolific days for a defensive back in Shenandoah and ODAC history in helping the Hornets to a 45-0 shutout on Averett University on Saturday. Wilder, who registered four solo tackles against the Cougars, intercepted four passes and blocked a first quarter field goal attempt to help SU post its third shutout of the season. The four interceptions tie SU's school record. He is the sixth player in ODAC history to record four interceptions, with the last occurrence in 2009 by former Guilford College safety Jordan Nelson against Catholic University. The blocked kick came on a 42-yard attempt with 3:57 on the first quarter clock and Shenandoah leading 7-0. Wilder corralled his first interception at the outset of the second quarter when he jumped in front of a pass at the SU 34-yard line. An illegal block penalty wiped out a 51-yard return to the AU 5-yard line. Wilder took the ball away a second time with under 3:30 to go in the first half. He left his coverage responsibility and stepped in front of the intended target to haul in throw. He returned it 17 yards to the AU 30-yard line to set up a Hornets TD pass on the next play. Wilder's third interception ended Averett's first possession of the second half. This time, the pass went off the hands of the AU receiver with Wilder diving to snare the deflected ball at the Shenandoah 38-yard line. Wilder's final takeaway came three plays into the fourth quarter. Deep in SU territory, the AU quarterback rolled left and loft a pass for the end zone, but Wilder went up with one hand and hauled it in. He came out of the end zone four yards, which the SU offense turned into a 96-yard touchdown drive on the ensuing possession. For the season, Wilder now leads the ODAC with five interceptions. He has made 42 tackles including 31 solo stops. He has two blocked kicks to go with a pair of pass breakups.
  • David Wallis, Randolph-Macon, Sr., Wide Receiver
    October 30, 2022
Wallis, a senior from Cedar Point, N.C., put together his second straight and third overall 100-plus yard receiving day in helping Randolph-Macon remain unbeaten at 8-0 with a 35-21 victory at Washington and Lee. Wallis finished with seven receptions for a second straight game. He collected a career-high 195 yards and two touchdowns. He added a pair of kickoff returns that covered 33 yards and drew a pass interference penalty in the end zone that led to a R-MC score. Five of Wallis catches covered at least 15 yards with plays of 23, 55, and 75 highlighting his effort. His first touchdown catch tied the game at 7-all with 7:04 on the first quarter clock. He returned to the line of scrimmage to collect a screen pass and slipped the grasp of a pair of would-be tacklers as he weaved 23 yards to the end zone. Wallis' second score came on R-MC's first possession of the second quarter. On a straight fly pattern, he beat a W&L cornerback for speed and caught a 40-yard pass from Drew Campanale at the 35-yard line. He coasted in the rest of the way for a 75-yard touchdown catch-and-run. Wallis setup another Yellow Jackets touchdown with a 55-yard catch on their first drive of the second half. He found space between two defensive backs and hauled in Campanale's throw at the 18-yard line. He sprint from the left sideline towards the middle to the 2-yard line, setting up R-MC's fourth touchdown for a 28-14 lead. For the season, Wallis leads the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (8), yards per game (103.6), and yards per catch (25.9). He is third in receiving yardage (725) and tied for seventh in receptions (28).
  • Will Pickren, Hampden-Sydney, Jr., Safety
    October 23, 2022
Pickren, a junior from Mount Pleasant, S.C., picks up his second ODAC defensive weekly award in as many weeks after helping Hampden-Sydney to a 44-43 victory at Washington and Lee in overtime on Saturday afternoon. Pickren was all over the field against the Generals with a game and career-high 22 tackles including seven solo stops to go with a quarterback hurry. The 22 tackles is not only the most for any player in the ODAC this season, but it ranks as the third-most in a single-game in NCAA Division III this season. Pickren has recorded 10 or more tackles in five straight games with Saturday's outing marking his 11th career double-figure day. He currently leads the ODAC in overall (85) and assisted (55) tackles as well as tackles per game (12.1). He has intercepted a pair of passes on the year.
  • Tanner Bernard, Hampden-Sydney, Sr., Quarterback
    October 23, 2022
Bernard, a senior from Lynchburg, Va., continued the best stretch of play of his collegiate career with his second ODAC offensive weekly award of the season in leading Hampden-Sydney to a 44-43 overtime victory at Washington and Lee on Saturday afternoon. Bernard was responsible for four touchdowns on the day, but it was his final one that proved the difference. Combined with kicker Elijah Swett's extra point, Bernard's three-yard touchdown run to cap the Tigers' first and only overtime possession provided the winning margin. Bernard, who ran for 32 yards on 10 carries overall, threw for 313 yards and three touchdowns without an interception on 31-of-45 passing. He has thrown for more than 300 yards in all six games played this season. Each of his three TD passes either tied the score or game H-SC the lead in its back-and-forth affair with the Generals. He hit Austin Fernandez with a five-yard score to make it 7-7 early in the second quarter. He and David Byler connected for touchdowns twice. The first covered six yards for a 14-10 lead with 5:50 to go in the first half. The pair then hooked up a second six-yard scoring play for a 23-17 lead with 8:40 on the third quarter clock. For the season, Bernard leads the ODAC in most passing categories including completions (171), attempts (263), yards (2,200), yards per game (366.7), and touchdown passes (20). He is second in completion percentage (65.0%) and has thrown just three interceptions. He has also run for three touchdowns.
  • Will Pickren, Hampden-Sydney, Jr., Safety
    October 16, 2022
Pickren, a junior from Mount Pleasant, S.C., put together a strong game in helping Hampden-Sydney post a 37-26 home victory over Averett University. Pickren posted 11 total tackles with a trio of solo stops. Twice he made plays on the ball. He forced a fumble by AU's quarterback on a stop late in the fourth quarter, with the Cougars recovering the loose ball. In the first quarter, Pickren picked off his second pass of the season. Already leading 14-0, Pickren hauled in an errant pass at the 38-yard line and weaved his way down to the Averett 20-yard line for an 18-yard return. That turnover setup a Hampden-Sydney score for a 21-0 lead midway though the first quarter. For the season, Pickren is second in the ODAC with 63 tackles. That includes 23 solo stops and an ODAC-best 40 assisted tackles.
  • Drew Campanale, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Quarterback
    October 16, 2022
Campanale, a junior from Shrewsbury, Mass., etched his name in the ODAC and Randolph-Macon record books on Saturday in leading Randolph-Macon to a 44-7 win over Bridgewater College in a contest of unbeaten programs. Campanale became the first quarterback in ODAC history to attempt at least 15 passes and complete all of them. He went 17-of-17 through the air, eclipsing the 16-of-17 showing by former Yellow Jackets signal-caller Burke Estes against Emory & Henry College (W, 52-29) in 2017. Campanale has completed more than 70-percent of his passes in all six games played this season. In addition to his efficiency against Bridgewater, Campanale also accounted for four touchdowns without a turnover. He threw for 256 yards and three scores and ran for 35 yards and his first rushing touchdown of the season on four carries. He opened the game's scoring with a 14-yard slant pass to Joey Hunt with 10:11 on the first quarter clock. Campanale made it 14-0 R-MC on its next possession. On a planned run, he broke a tackle in the backfield and ran around the left side for a 25-yard touchdown run. Campanale's right arm made it 21-7 with under six minutes to go in the first half. He connected with David Wallis in the back-right corner of the end zone for a 16-yard score. Campanale's remaining TD throw covered 30 yards with 9:40 to play. On a 10-yard crossing pattern, Campanale's pass to intended receiver Holden Hodge went off his shoulder pads and went skyward, but Hodge was able to haul in the high-fly and turn the corner for a 20-yard sprint the rest of the way. For the season, Campanale leads the ODAC in completion percentage (78.8%), yards per attempt (10.7), and passing efficiency rating (201.8). He is 82-of-104 overall for 1,114 yards and 11 touchdowns against just one interception. He has also run for 115 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries.
  • Shawn Harris, Bridgewater, Sr., Defensive Back
    October 09, 2022
Harris, a senior from Washington, D.C., put together a career day in helping Bridgewater to a 23-17 come-from-behind victory over Shenandoah to remain unbeaten at 5-0 on the season. Harris made a game-high and career-best 16 tackles including 10 solo stops. That is the fourth-most tackles in Bridgewater history. Included in that effort were 4.0 tackles for loss with a quarterback sack. The 4.0 TFLs are the second-most in the Eagles' record book. Harris forced a fumble that was ultimately recovered by the Shenandoah offense, but arguably his biggest contribution did result in a takeaway. With SU leading 17-9 early in the fourth quarter, Harris stepped in front of a quick out pass towards the numbers on the far sideline and intercepted a pass at the SU 34-yard line. He returned it down to the two-yard line, setting up a touchdown run by Albert Mensah on the next play. Bridgewater would go on to register one additional turnover to setup the game-winning score. For the season, Harris has made 35 tackles including 25 solo efforts. The sack and interception were his first of the season.
  • Tanner Bernard, Hampden-Sydney, Sr., Quarterback
    October 09, 2022
Bernard, a senior from Lynchburg, Va., registered his first career 400-yard passing game in leading Hampden-Sydney to a 35-16 road win at Ferrum on Saturday. Bernard, a two-time All-ODAC selection, shook off two miscues to complete 75-percent of his passes at 33-of-44 for a career-best 440 yards and four touchdown passes. While he connected with seven different receivers against the Panthers, Bernard's connect with Mason Cunningham was prolific. The pair linked up 13 times for 163 yards and three touchdowns. That included the game's second score via a crossing route over the middle from 18 yards away for a 14-0 lead. They made it 20-0 early in the second quarter with a comeback quick hitch that turned into a 36-yard catch-and-run. Their final scoring connection came midway through the third quarter and covered 42 yards with Bernard finding Cunningham down the seam. Bernard's remaining TD throw was the first score of the game as he hit Jamahdia Whitby along the left sideline for a 72-yard catch-and-sprint to paydirt. Bernard completed five of his first six passes, two of which went for scores. At one point, he completed eight straight passes to six different receivers including a converted two-point attempt. For the season, Bernard leads the ODAC in passing yards (1,435), yards per game (358.8), touchdowns (12), and completions (107). He is second in attempts (169) and completion percentage (63.3%).
  • Jackson Deaver, Randolph-Macon, Jr., Linebacker
    October 02, 2022
Deaver, a junior from Fayetteville, N.C., was ever-present in Guilford's offensive backfield in helping the Randolph-Macon defense pitch a second-half shutout in a 48-19 victory over the Quakers in Ashland on Saturday. Deaver tied for team-high honors with eight tackles featuring five solo efforts. He made 5.5 of his stops behind the line of scrimmage, costly Guilford an eye-opening 27 yards of offense. Those tackles for loss include 2.0 quarterback sacks and helped Randolph-Macon's defense pitch a second-half shutout where the unit forced the Quakers into five negative yardage drives of six possessions. Deaver's sacks came on back-to-back plays in the fourth quarter, setting Guilford back 13 yards and forcing a punt from its own end zone. Deaver's first two tackles of the game were his only two stops that did not cost GC yardage. For the season, Deaver has made 18 total tackles with 12 solo stops. He is second in the ODAC in tackles for loss (6.5) and lost yards from those TFLs (29). He is tied for third with 3.0 sacks.
  • Andrew Ihle, Randolph-Macon, Sr., Quarterback
    October 02, 2022
Ihle, a senior from Apex, N.C., put together a career-day in Randolph-Macon's 48-19 victory over Guilford on Saturday afternoon. Ihle ran for career-highs of 83 yards and five touchdowns on 13 carries for a 6.4 yards per rush average. The five rushing scores are one off the R-MC school-record. This is the second time in as many reports that a player from an ODAC school has registered five touchdowns in a game, with Ihle joining Hampden-Sydney running back Melik Frost's efforts from week three. Ihle is now tied for second in ODAC history for most rushing touchdowns in one game, while his five overall touchdowns and 30 points are tied for second and fourth, respectively. All three entries feature multiple honorees. Ihle, who lined up as Randolph-Macon's red zone running quarterback against the Quakers, ran in from five yards to make it 13-13 with 13:55 on the second quarter clock for his first touchdown. He then plunged in from two yards out at the 10:18 mark of the same frame for a 20-13 advantage. Ihle scored the first of his three second-half touchdowns on the Yellow Jackets' first drive with a nine-yard run out of the shotgun, dragging one would-be tackler to the goalline. He added a three-yard touchdown dive over the left side with 1:47 to go in the third quarter, and then capped the game's scoring with a 13-yard burst up the middle off an option play on fourth-and-three with 4:10 left in regulation. For the season, Ihle has run for 209 yards on 36 carries (5.8/rush). His eight rushing touchdowns are the most via the ground in the ODAC and are tied with H-SC's Frost for most overall scores in the league. Both have notched 48 points.
  • Ben Burgan, Shenandoah, Sr., Linebacker
    September 18, 2022
Burgan, a senior from Boonsboro, Md., has been nothing short of a tackling machine for Shenandoah to help the Hornets start the season a 3-0. Burgan registered his third straight game of double figure tackles in SU's 34-29 comeback victory at Maryville (Tenn.). He made a game and season-high 15 tackles including eight solo stops, playing a major role in a 28-7 halftime lead. Five of his tackles held the Scots to two or fewer yards including three one-yard gains. Burgan has now registered double-digit tackles in 11 straight games dating back to last season. Saturday marked his fifth effort of 15 or more tackles during that stretch. He has 17 games of 10 or more stops in his career. For the season, Burgan leads the ODAC in overall (39) and solo (24) tackles as well as tackles per game (13.0). He is second in sacks (4.0) and tied for second in tackles for loss (5.0).
  • Malik Frost, Hampden-Sydney, Jr., Running Back
    September 18, 2022
Frost, a junior from Hardeeville, S.C., put together a career-day in the Tigers 70-28 victory over Greensboro College. Frost ran for a career-best 211 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries, good for a 10.0 yards per rush average. He also caught three passes for 59 yards and a touchdown, giving him five total TDs and 270 all-purpose yards. His five touchdowns tie for second with several individuals in the ODAC's single-game record book. The last time it was done was in 2018 by former Guilford standout De'Eric Bell. Frost's 30 total points -- helping H-SC to the second-most points in head coach Marty Favret's tenure -- are tied for fourth in ODAC history with several players. Frost scored his first touchdown untouched straight up the middle from three yards out. He again found the painted grass on the Tigers next drive, giving them a 28-0 lead with 1:11 showing on the first quarter clock following a 47-yard catch-and-run connection with quarterback Andrew Puccinelli. Frost made it 35-0 H-SC with a 35-yard run over the right side where he broke one arm-tackle and out-ran the defense to the pylon. Frost pushed H-SC's lead back out to 28 points midway through the third quarter as he found a hole up the middle and left a would-be tackler flailing on the way to a 64-yard untouched sprint to the end zone, the longest run in the ODAC this season. He registered his final score with a six-yard burst up the middle, carrying two tacklers to the goalline for a 63-28 lead with 53-seconds to play in the third quarter. Through three games, Frost leads the ODAC in rushing yards (371), rushing yards per game (123.7), rushing touchdowns (6), points (42), and overall touchdowns (7).
  • Aaron Moore, Bridgewater, Jr., Safety
    September 11, 2022
Moore, a junior from Roanoke, Va., continued his torrid start to the season with another stellar effort in the Eagles 58-10 victory over Southern Virginia. Moore, who was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his efforts against Gettysburg, played a part in three of the six turnovers Bridgewater's defense forced against the Knights. His first takeaway came late in the first quarter when he intercepted a pass and returned it seven yards to the Eagles' 37-yard line. That eventually was converted into a Bridgewater touchdown at the outset of the second frame. Moore, who tied for team high honors with seven tackles, hauled in another errant SVU pass midway through the third quarter. This time his returned concluded 20 yards later in the Knights' end zone for an Eagles touchdown. That pick-six marked his second straight effort in as many games following last week's 35-yard return score. Moore capped his day with a fumble recovery late in the third quarter, which the Eagles offense again used to score a touchdown. Through two games, Moore has registered 12 tackles (10 solo) with an ODAC-best three interceptions.
  • Malcom Anderson, Bridgewater, Sr., Quarterback
    September 11, 2022
Anderson, a senior from Stafford, Va., had a four touchdown day to help the Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season with a 58-10 victory over former ODAC foe Southern Virginia University on Saturday at Jopson Field. Anderson connected with three different receivers on scoring throws and ran in a touchdown. After a scoreless first quarter, Anderson followed a Kennedy Fauntleroy touchdown run with one of his own as Anderson broke a pair of tackles and stretched over the goalline for an eight-yard score with 10:01 on the second quarter clock. He then threw the first of his three TD passes as the horn sounded for halftime. He rolled right and heaved a 40-yard bomb that Freddie Watkins hauled in to put BC up, 28-10, at the intermission. Anderson threw two more touchdown passes in the second half as Bridgewater effectively put the game away. He found Albert Mensah on an out pass with the Eagles' receiver weaving into the end zone on a 10-yard play. Less than two minutes later, Anderson again rolled right and found Viante Tucker at the back of the end zone near the goal post for a 12-yard score with 14:25 to go. Thru two games, Anderson is 23-of-35 passing (65.7%) for 257 yards and four touchdowns without an interception. He has 52 rushing yards on eight carries including Saturday's touchdown.
  • Noah Hines, Bridgewater, So., Defensive Back
    September 04, 2022
Hines, a sophomore from Garner, N.C., put his stamp on the first game of not only Bridgewater's season but his inaugural collegiate outing in helping the Eagles to a 29-14 road win at Gettysburg College. Hines posted six tackles on the day with three solo stops. He was involved in two of the five turnovers Bridgewater's defense forced, both factoring in the numbers on the scoreboard. Late in the third quarter, fellow Eagles defensive Val West jarred the ball loose from a Bullets' pass catcher. Hines recovered the loose ball at the Gettysburg 44-yard line. On the fifth play of the ensuing drive, Bridgewater took the lead for the first time at 16-14 on the final tick of the third-quarter clock. Hines then kept points off the board with under three minutes to play. He blanketed a would-be pass-catcher with perfect coverage as the Bullets tried to complete a corner pass for a touchdown. But it was Hines who high-pointed the ball, ending a 12-play drive abruptly with an interception in the end zone with 2:46 to play.
  • Bailey Baker, Guilford, Sr., Quarterback
    September 04, 2022
Baker, a senior from New London, N.C., opened the new year with a banner day, helping the Quakers snap an eight-game skid dating back to last season with a 48-37 triumph at Greensboro College in the annual Gate City Soup Bowl. Baker accounted for 392 yards of total offense and had a hand in all six Guilford offensive touchdowns. He was 15-of-25 through the air for 316 yards and four touchdowns as he completed passes to 10 different receivers. Twice he found Tre Alexander with scoring throws that covered 52 and 75 yards, helping the senior pass-catcher to 141 yards on three receptions. Baker also had an eight-yard TD pass to Matthew Kidd and a 10-yard scoring throw to Thomas Laws. With his feet, Baker carried the ball 16 times for 76 yards that featured a 38-yard scamper. He scored a pair of touchdowns on one-yard dives.
