Lynchburg's Brady Named NFHCA Defensive Player of the Week

GENEVA, N.Y. -- Kayla Brady's breakout performance continues to pay dividends for University of Lynchburg's star field hockey goalkeeper. The National Field Hockey Coaches Association named Brady its Division III defensive player of the week Wednesday.

The junior from Millsboro, Del. guided Lynchburg to a 3-0 week last week, highlighted by her career-high 16 saves in the Hornets' shutout victory over No. 3 Johns Hopkins at home Saturday. Lynchburg won the game, 2-0, marking the first time since 2018 the perennially powerful Blue Jays were shut out.

She also guarded the cage in last Wednesday's 2-1 win at Stevenson and Sunday's 2-1 victory over Dickinson, totaling five saves in those two games.

Brady, who was also the Old Dominion Athletic Conference player of the week, ranks second in the conference with 44 saves and an .830 save percentage.

It is the second national player of the week honor in less than a year for the Hornets; Jackie Lerro won the NFHCA's offensive weekly honor Sept. 22, 2021. No Hornet has been named the NFHCA defensive player of the week since goalkeeper Laurel Nicks in October of 2019.

Lynchburg is 6-1 and heads to Danville, Ky. for a pair of games this weekend ranked No. 18 in the latest NFHCA Division III coaches' poll.
