2013 Field Hockey Players of the Week

Kelsey Link, Lynchburg, Jr., AttackNovember 04, 2013Link, a junior from Spotsylvania, Va., helped the Hornets lock up a perfect ODAC season and the top seed in the ODAC field hockey tournament. Link scored three times in Lynchburg's 6-1 season-ending win over Eastern Mennonite, which locked up a first round bye for the seven time conference champions. Link is currently fifth in the ODAC with 23 points and fourth with 11 goals scored.

Sarah Brock, Shenandoah, So., MidfielderOctober 27, 2013Brock, a sophomore from Chesterfield, Va., helped the Hornets to a pair of wins last week as SU looks to secure a spot in the upcoming ODAC tournament. Brock started her week with a bang, recording the only goal in a 1-0 win at Eastern Mennonite. The tally came in the 40th minute of play. She then added to her point total at Roanoke on the weekend as she assisted on the opening goal in the Hornets' 2-0 triumph over the Maroons. Brock now has four goals and four assists on the season.

Abby Bunting, Lynchburg, Fr., AttackOctober 21, 2013Bunting, a freshman from Pocomoke City, Md., helped the Hornets to a trio of wins over the past week, including ODAC victories over Sweet Briar and Virginia Wesleyan. Bunting, who notched four goals on the week, opened with one goal in a 7-1 triumph at home against the Vixens. She followed that with the second and third goals in a 4-2 non-conference win over Centre College. She capped her week with a tally in a 7-1 win at home against the Marlins. Bunting has notched 11 points on the season with five goals and one assist.

Rachel Loy, Bridgewater, So., MidfielderOctober 14, 2013Loy, a sophomore from Millerstown, Pa., helped extend the Eagles winning streak of Roanoke to six straight games with a 3-2 overtime victory on Friday. Just over seven minutes into the extra frame, Loy notched the game-winner to secure the Eagles third straight victory and seventh in the last 10 games. Loy has now scored in three straight contests. She now has nine points on the season with four goals and an assist.

Carrie Jacobs, Randolph-Macon, Jr., BackOctober 07, 2013Jacobs, a junior from Orange, Va., helped the Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 week in ODAC play by notching 10 total points. She opened her week with a goal and an assist in a 3-1 win over Roanoke. She backed that up with three goals and one assist for seven total points in a 5-3 road win at Virginia Wesleyan. Jacobs is currently third in the ODAC with 17 points on six goals and five assists.

Shelbi Holloman, Roanoke, Fr., AttackSeptember 30, 2013Holloman, a freshman from Suffolk, Va., helped the Maroons win their ODAC opener, although it took extra time to do it. Both squads played to a scoreless draw thru 70 mintues of action, but Holloman secured the victory for RC by turning the ninth penalty corner taken by the Maroons into a game-winner in the 72nd minute. The goal marked Holloman's second of the season, one which handed VWC its first conference loss in three games.

Kelani Bailey, Shenandoah, So., AttackSeptember 23, 2013Bailey, a sophomore from Norfolk, Va., helped lead Shenandoah to a 1-1 week. She opened her week by converting a penalty stroke in a tight 4-3 loss at York (Pa.). Bailey and the Hornets rebounded against Washington and Jefferson as Bailey notched both goals of a 2-0 SU victory. Bailey is currently third in the ODAC with 12 points on five goals and two assists.

Lindsay Baker, Virginia Wesleyan, Jr., GoalkeeperSeptember 16, 2013Baker, a junior from Havertown, Pa., helped Virginia Wesleyan to 3-0 for the first time since 2003 by making 13 saves in a 2-1 overtime win over Frostburg State on Sunday. She stopped two flurries of shots in the second half as the Bobcats tried to end the game in regulation. They had a shot to do it again in overtime, but Baker thwarted FSU's penalty stroke. Seven minutes later, VWC notched the game-winner. Baker currently leads the ODAC with a 0.64 GAA, allowing only two goals so far this season.

Jessica Balsano, Bridgewater, Sr., GoalkeeperSeptember 09, 2013Balsano, a senior from Sandy Hook, Conn., posted the third shutout of her career as Bridgewater topped Rhodes, 2-0. The Eagles' keeper faced 20 shots on the afternoon and turned away the eight that were on-cage, including five in the first half as BC built a 2-0 advantage. She stopped three more attempts in the second half to help the Eagles remain unbeaten this season.

Catherine Pricone, Randolph-Macon, Jr., MidfielderSeptember 03, 2013Pricone, a junior from Arlington, Va., opened the season by scoring Randolph-Macon's first seven goals of the season to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 1-1 weekend. At York (Pa.), She notched all five goals in a 5-4 triumph over the Spartans. Down 4-2 in the second half, Pricone rattled off a trio of scores in a little over seven minutes, notching her clinching tally three minutes from time. In a 4-3 double-overtime loss to McDaniel, Pricone twice knotted the score in regulation before R-MC fell in the 87th minute of play. Pricone currently leads the young ODAC scoring charts in points (14) and goals scored (7).
