Generals Tie for Ninth at NCAA Women's Golf, Kanaby Places Eighth Individually

EAST LANSING, Mich. --- The Washington and Lee women's golf team finished in a tie for ninth-place at the NCAA Division III Championship at the Forest Akers Golf Club West Course in East Lansing, Mich.

The Generals shot their best round of the tournament on the final day, carding a 321 (+33) for a four-day total of 330-324-327-321—1302 (+150) that tied with Illinois Wesleyan for ninth-place out of the 15 teams that made the cut.  The ninth-place finish was a new top standard for the program.  The pervious best was a tie for 11th in 2019.
 
Methodist University came back from four strokes down entering the final day to win the title with a 321-300-308-302—1231 (+79).  Carnegie Mellon placed second with a 1236 (+84).
 
W&L sophomore Megan Kanaby (Chapel Hill, N.C. / Cardinal Gibbons) completed a fantastic week, which saw her finish in eighth-place out of the 81 golfers that made the cut.  She finished with a +21 score of 80-75-78-76—309, which was the lowest 72-hole total in program history.  Her eighth-place showing is also a program-best mark.
 
Makensie Toole of George Fox won the individual championship by 14 strokes, carding a 76-70-74-71—291 (+3).
 
Sophomore Cassie Robinson (Emporia, Va. / Greensville County) placed in a tie for 49th with a +41 score of 83-77-86-83—329, while classmate Grace Owens (Hinsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) tallied a +44 score of 85-89-79-79—332 to finish 57th overall.
 
Junior Savannah Johnson (Owens Cross Roads, Ala. / Huntsville) and senior Beth Ann Townsend (Greenville, S.C. / Travelers Rest) placed in a tie for 70th and 73rd, respectively.  Johnson tallied an 83-86-84-86—339 (+51) and Townsend shot 84-86-88-83—341 (+53).
 
Washington and Lee has now completed its 2021 season after competing in its fourth NCAA Championship and making the cut for the second straight trip.
