W&L Places 13th, Kanaby Ties for Seventh at NCAA Women's Golf Championships

HOUSTON, Texas --- The Washington and Lee women's golf team finished in solo 13th-place at the NCAA Division III Championship at at Bay Oaks Country Club in Houston, Texas.

The Generals, ranked 10th in the country entering the four-round affair, posted a 92-over team scored of 1244 with rounds of 309, 301, 322, and 312, sequentially. The 1244 set the program record for team total in a four-round tournament by 32 strokes, surpassing the 1276 W&L posted at the 2019 NCAA Championship.

Junior Megan Kanaby, the 37th-ranked women's golfer in Division III by Golfstat, completed the tournament with a 73-73-76-71—293 (+5) that was just four strokes behind the NCAA Individual Champion, Ellen Dong of Emory University.  Dong carded a +1 score of 75-68-72-74—289 and claimed the title in a one-hole playoff with Alison Takamiya of George Fox. 
 
Kanaby's 72-hole scoring total easily eclipsed the program record of 309 that she had set herself just last season when she placed eighth overall.

Emory University won the team title by a resounding 26 strokes over second place University of Redlands. The Eagles posted a 23-over score of 1175 (292-296-291-296).

W&L senior Savannah Johnson (Owens Cross Roads, Ala. / Huntsville) closed out her career with one of the best performances across her four seasons, placing in a tie for 59th overall out of the 81 players that made the cut with a +29 total of 85-71-81-80—317. First-year An Shelmire (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) tied for 65th with a +32 score of 77-78-79-86—320 and classmate Laetitia Roegner (Greenwich, Conn. / IMG Academy) was 78th overall with an 80-79-87-84—330 (+42). First-year Marcella Mercer (Bigfork, Montana / Flathead) capped her tournament with a 77 that was the third-lowest score for the Generals on Friday.  She withdrew during the second round with an injury, returning for the final two rounds.  Her scores for the week were 79-wd-86-77.

University of Lynchburg sophomore and ODAC Golfer of the Year Emily Brubaker also competed in Houston. She shot a 78 in round one, and tallied an 82 in round two. The Cardinal Gibbons graduate is the first player in program history to play at the national championship.
 
W&L's 13th-place showing was its fourth Top 15 finish in the NCAA National Championship in program history.  W&L placed a program-best tied for ninth just last season.
