    In a stroke of great luck from the powers that be in the golf world, the ODAC Women's Golf Championship concluded a full slate of 54 holes at Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Va. Washington and Lee University won its fifth straight league trophy behind its second straight sub-300 team round to finish at 50-over 902, 21 strokes clear of runner-up University of Lynchburg. Generals first-year Julia Haetzel posted the lone under-par round of the tournament to propel her to the top of the leaderboard and individual medalist honors by one stroke over Lynchburg's Emily Brubaker, last season's individual champion. In addition to team and tournament awards, the All-ODAC Women's Golf Awards were announced following the tournament. W&L's Megan Kanaby collected her second ODAC Golfer of the Year honor, pairing this with the recognition she received as the league's top player in 2021. Kanaby was also tabbed the ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  Lynchburg mentor Mike Veverka secured ODAC Coach of the Year laurels, while Randolph-Macon College freshman Elli Flinchum was named the ODAC Rookie of the Year. Bridgewater College senior Shaina Beach received ODAC Sportswoman of the Year distinction for a second straight season.
  • Previewing the ODAC Women's Golf Championships

    Golf tournament week continues with the ODAC Women's Golf Championship set to begin on Friday morning at Old Trail Golf Club in Crozet, Va. The women's 54-hole championship is slated to be competed on Friday-Sunday, April 28-30. This is the second year the ODAC's two golf championships have competed at different locations and on different dates. Guilford College claimed its record 19th men's crown on Tuesday at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The men's contingent was greeted with chilly temperatures each morning, but the weather was largely excellent thereafter. The conference's women's event will not be so lucky with cooler temperatures and rain expected for much of the weekend. Still, the crack staff at Old Trail -- which played host to the 2022 ODAC Men's Golf Championship -- will have the course as ready as possible to conduct championship play. The first round is slated to begin on Friday at 9:00 a.m. ET.

    Guilford College completed a wire-to-wire run over three rounds of competition to claimed its conference record 19th ODAC men's golf championship on Tuesday morning and afternoon at the Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. Quakers junior Sam Davidson bridged a two-shot gap between him and 36-hole leader Pierce Robinson from Washington and Lee University to collected medalist honors by one stroke and win his first collegiate tournament. Davidson and Robinson accounted for two members of the All-ODAC First Team as the 2022-23 all-conference teams were announced in conjunction with the championship's awards ceremony. Guilford's Michael Vick, who placed third at the championship, earned Golfer of the Year laurels while head coach Adam Crawford took home Jack Jensen Coach of the Year honors. Averett University's Max Petterson garnered ODAC Rookie of the Year recognition, while Shenandoah University's Trevor Berg received Ted Keller Sportsman of the Year distinction. University of Lynchburg junior Andrew Watson -- who fired a 5-under 67 on the final day to place third overall -- earned ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
  • Previewing the ODAC Men's Golf Championships

    The 2023 ODAC spring championship season kicks off on Sunday with the ODAC Men's Golf Tournament. This year marks the second straight campaign where the conference's men's and women's event compete at separate venues. The men's 54-hole championship slated for Sunday-Tuesday, April 23-25, will be followed by the women's three-round affair on Friday-Sunday, April 28-30. This year's men's championship takes us to a new course with Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C., serving as the host venue. Forest Oaks opened its gates for competition in 1962 and was the home of the Greater Greensboro Open for 30 years from 1977 to 2007. The course, which underwent a major overhaul by former PGA Tour star Davis Love III's Love Design Group in 2002, will be played at par-72 at an initial 6,928 yards for the first round with possible changes to distances later in the event.

Virginia Wesleyan's Jacob Swigart finished seventh in his first event of the season with a pair of sub-80 rounds, earning him the ODAC Men's Golfer of the Week nod.

    The final golf report of the fall season for week nine features just one tournament. The O'Briant-Jensen Memorial hosted by Guilford College was a jam-packed affair with nine of the top-33 teams in Division III in the 18-team field including four from the top-10 in the latest rankings published by Golfstat. Hampden-Sydney's Alex Rubino earns the ODAC weekly honor after topping the 102-golfer field at 9-under 133. This is the second time Rubino has claimed medalist honors in his collegiate career.

    Week seven of the ODAC season concluded with a bevy of golf tournaments for league players. Teams competed in five total events led by national fields for both the men and women at the Golfweek Division III Invitational in Sandestin, Fla. There was also dual action at the Cardinal Classic hosted by Catholic University, and the men's edition of the VSGA Intercollegiate was held in Suffolk. This week's ODAC Golfers of the Week both competed among the national fields at their respective Golfweek Division III Invitationals. Lynchburg first-year Alan Van Asch posted a top-10 finish in the men's event at the Raven Golf Club, while Washington and Lee sophomore Laetitia Roegner did the same at the Baytowne Golf Club.

    For the the third time in the last four weeks, an ODAC golfer earned individual medalist honors. Week six also features a team title. There were only two events competed over the past seven days with the conference's men's players participating in the Royals Lakes Invitational hosted by Oglethorpe University in Flowery Branch, Ga. The women's tournament on the books was much more in the ODAC's footprint with league teams taking to the Lexington Golf and Country Club for the Knights Invitational hosted by Southern Virginia University. This week's ODAC Golfers of the Week are Sweet Briar College sophomore Amani Narang and Washington and Lee University senior Pierce Robinson. Narang earned medalist honors at the Knights Invitational after winning a one-hole playoff with Bridgewater College sophomore Sophia Martone. Robinson picks up his second weekly award after tying for second at Royal Lakes, leading W&L to first in the team table with a program-record 36-hole score of 5-under 571.

    Two tournaments dotted both the men's and women's golf schedules in week five, although a fifth was postponed due to inclement weather. ODAC golfers placed well in all four events including the Division III Fall Preview and Mason-Dixon Collegiate Classic on the men's ledger and the Rhodes Classic and Golden Oaks Shootout on the women's docket. Earning the ODAC Golfer of the Week awards are Washington and Lee senior Pierce Robinson and Randolph-Macon freshman Emmerson Bartley. Robinson tied for seventh at the Division III Fall preview, helping the Generals men to a tied for second in a deep field. Bartley put together her first collegiate top-15 finish in a tie for 13th at the Rhodes Classic.

    Winning tournaments is all the rage for conference players as both ODAC Golfers of the Week took home medalist honors to cap week four reporting. Guilford College sophomore Michael Vick carded three stellar rounds -- including an ODAC season-low 65 -- to win by five strokes at the Gate City Invitational. Bridgewater College sophomore Sophia Martone used a bit more drama to win the Bridgewater Invitational as she bested last year's ODAC Championship individual champion, University of Lynchburg's Emily Brubaker, in a playoff after two rounds in Harrisonburg.

    Winning on a large scale continued for ODAC athletes for the final report of the week featuring men's and women's golf. Both of this week's ODAC Golfers of the Week -- Connor Christie from Shenandoah University and An Shelmire from Washington and Lee University -- topped their respective fields. Christie posted a pair of eagles to aid his comeback to best 80 other players and win medalist honors at the Kinder-Williams Invitational hosted by Bridgewater College. Shelmire also used a second-round surge that included three birdies to top a national leaderboard of 93 competitors.
