2018-19 Indoor Track Athletes of the Week

  • Quinn Harlan, Roanoke, So., Sprints
    February 18, 2019
    Harlan, a sophomore from Woonsocket, R.I., improved upon her high national ranking in the 60-meter dash at the Virginia Tech Invitational. The 2018 national runner-up in the event posted the third-fastest time in NCAA Division III over the weekend as she finished fifth overall and first among Division III competitors in the event at 0:07.69. That improved her previous ODAC season-best time by 0.05 seconds. Harlan actually beat her previous time twice in Blacksburg as she ran a 0:07.70 in the prelims.
  • Hank Patrick, Washington and Lee, Sr., Mid-Distance

    Patrick, a senior from Baton Rouge, La., took 14th out of 37 athletes in the mile at the JDL DMR Invitational on Saturday. Facing mostly Division I competition, he was the top Division III runner. He crossed the finish line in a career-best time of 4:25.56, which is the second-fastest time in the ODAC this year.
  • Mara Briggs, Roanoke, Sr., High Jump

    Briggs, a senior from Marion, Va., continues to build her way up to a possible second-straight berth to the NCAA championship field in the high jump after a strong showing at the Virginia Tech Challenge over the weekend. Briggs improved upon her ODAC best-mark in the event, eclipsing 1.65 meters (5-5.00) to finish second overall on attempts and first among Division III competitors. Her new mark ranks 15th in the country and sits 0.06 meters better than the next closest ODAC competitor.
  • Nick Greenberg, Washington and Lee, Fr.
    February 18, 2019
    Greenberg, a first-year from Allen, Texas, competed in a pair of jumps at the Susquehanna Invitational in preparation for the upcoming ODAC Championships. Greenberg broke the Washington and Lee record and took over the top spot in the ODAC in the long jump with a leap of 6.94 meters (22-9.25) to win the event. That mark ranks 33rd in NCAA Division III. It snapped the record of 6.87 meters (22-6.50) set by Chris Sullivan in 2000. Greenberg also won the triple jump with a leap of 13.35 meters (43-9.75).
  • Endasia Mitchell, Lynchburg, Sr., Sprints/Mid-Distance
    February 11, 2019
    Mitchell, a senior from Perry Hall, Md., put together a pair of ODAC top-times which also rank inside the top-five in Lynchburg history after a pair of runs at the VMI Winter Relays. Mitchell tightened her grip on the conference's best time in the 400-meter dash with a 0:59.58 to place 10th overall. That ranks 47th nationally. When converted for track size down to the ODAC's flat-track standard for qualification, Mitchell's time of 0:58.79 puts her more than two seconds faster than the next best league competitor. Mitchell moved to the top of the conference chart in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:20.10 to finish seventh. That mark converts to 2:21.72, which ranks her just 0.19 seconds faster than teammate Michela Cholak on the ODAC list.
  • Donovan Fiore, Washington and Lee, Jr., Sprints
    February 11, 2019
    Fiore, a junior from Gilbert, Ariz., put together a pair of nationally top-50 ranked performances at the Noke Elite Meet hosted by Roanoke College. Fiore won the 400-meter dash with a time of 0:50.51 to take over the top spot in the ODAC. When converted for the national rankings, his time of 0:49.72 is slotted 47th in NCAA Division III. Fiore added a second place finish in the 200-meter dash at 22.52. That mark is second-fastest in the ODAC. It also converts to 22.13 to rank 32nd in the country. Fiore also ran the anchor leg of the winning 4x400-meter relay team, which stopped the watches at an ODAC-best 3:28.10.
  • Maddie Van Aken, Lynchburg, Sr., Pole Vault/Jumps
    February 11, 2019
    Van Aken, a senior from Blacksburg, Va., competed twice in the jumps at the VMI Winter Relays. Van Aken finished 16th in the triple jump at 10.44 meters (34-3.00), which is just outside the ODAC's top-five. Her specialty, however, is the pole vault and she certainly did not disappoint there. Van Aken improved her grasp on the top spot in the ODAC by clearing 3.65 meters (11-11.75), which is .25 meters (10-inches) higher than the next closest ODAC competitor. Van Aken now ranks 21st in NCAA Division III with her new program record and personal-best mark.
  • Joe O'Connor, Washington and Lee, Fy., Jumps/Hurdles
    February 11, 2019
    O'Connor, a first-year from Henrico, Va., competed three times at the Noke Elite Meet hosted by Roanoke College. O'Connor won the pole vault by clearing 4.56 meters (14-11.50), which gives him sole possession of the top spot in the ODAC. That mark ranks 31st in NCAA Division III and is 0.55 meters (1-5.75) clear of the next closest ODAC competitor. O'Connor added seventh place showing in the high jump at 1.76 meters (5-9.25). He also took a turn on the track, placing 2nd in the 60m hurdles at 0:08.80, which is just outside the ODAC's top-five.
  • Calista Ariel, Bridgewater, Jr., Distance

    Ariel, a junior from Fredericksburg, Va., set a Bridgewater record for the second straight week following her performance at the Camel City Invitational hosted at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Ariel, who set the Eagles' mile record (5:11.20) and took over the top spot in the ODAC in that event last week, did the same in the 5,000-meter run at JDL. She posted a new BC standard of 17:33.61, which ranks 14th in NCAA Division III. While that time is still well off the ODAC overall record (17:06.99 by Roanoke's Casey Smith in 2001), it would eclipse the ODAC championship record of 17:45.90 set by W&L's Jessica Shaw in 2008. Ariel is now the owner of the ODAC's seasonal best times in the 800-meter, 3,000-meter, and 5,000-meter events. Her mile time sits 39th in the country, while her 3K time is 32nd in Division III.
  • Davonta Womack, Bridgewater, Sr., Jumps/Sprints
    February 04, 2019
    Womack, a senior from Salem, Va., picks up his second straight weekly honor after posting a pair of nationally ranked sprints at the Camel City Invitational hosted at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem, N.C. Womack twice posted times of 6.94 seconds in the 60-meter dash before turning it up a notch to 6.89 seconds to place fourth overall as the only Division III competitor to qualify for the finals. That time ranks #1 in the ODAC, while his converted time (due to track size) of 22.01 seconds ranks #6 in the country. He also competed in and won his section of the 200-meter dash in 22.40 seconds. He was the top Division III finisher. That time took over the #1 position in the ODAC and sits 22nd on the national list. Womack added a solid showing in the long jump to his affair, leaping to 6.33 meters (20-9.25) to place ninth overall and first among Division III athletes.

    Briggs, a senior from Marion, Va., ramped it up in the high jump at the At The Last Minute Invitational hosted by Roanoke College over the weekend. Already the owner of the top mark in the ODAC, Briggs tightened her grip as the #1 high jumper by eclipsing 1.64 meters (5-4.50) to extend her lead over ODAC competitors to 0.05-meters (2.0 inches). She improved her Division III position as well, climbing to #19 in the country to leave her just outside of qualification range.

    Cockrell, a freshman from Gretna, Va., picks up his second weekly honor after a pair of strong performances in the throws at the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University. Cockrell was the top Division III finisher in both events and broke the Virginia Wesleyan record in the weight throw. He placed third overall of 22 competitors in that event, heaving the apparatus 15.06 meters (49-5.00) to take over the top spot in the ODAC. Cockrell added a fifth place showing in the shot put at 13.71 meters (44-11.75), which is just behind his season-best mark of 13.88 meters.

    Harlan, a sophomore from Woonsocket, R.I., continued her buildup towards championship season with a stellar showing at the Finn Pincus Invitational hosted by Roanoke College. The 2018 NCAA Division III runner-up in the 60-meter dash took to the event for the second straight week and planted herself back at the top of the national listings. She won the event at 7.74 seconds, which ranks third in the country. The two-time All-American added preliminary times of 7.81 and 7.96 in the event.
  • Jamie Hiegel, Bridgewater, Sr., Distance
    January 28, 2019
    Hiegel, a senior from Richmond, Va., put together a nationally-ranked effort at the Finn Pincus Invitational hosted by Roanoke College over the weekend. Hiegel won the 5,000-meter run in 15:16.40. That times tops the ODAC charts, giving him the best league mark in both long distances events when combined with his 8:39.15 time in the 3,000-meter run. Hiegel's 5K mark at Roanoke is ranked 30th in NCAA Division III when converted to 15:06.69 for track size.
  • Jaylyn Lane, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr., Jumps/Sprints
    January 28, 2019
    Lane, a freshman from Portsmouth, Va., picks up her second weekly award of the year after a strong showing in three events at the Captains Invitational and Combined Events hosted by Christopher Newport University. Lane strengthened her grip on the top spot in the ODAC in the triple jump by winning the event at 11.04 meters (36-2.75). That mark ranks 32nd in NCAA Division III. She added a fourth place finish in the long jump at 4.95 meters (16-3.00). That would rank third on the ODAC's posted chart, even though it falls behind her personal season-best (5.24m). Lane helped out her teammates to a relay win on the track as VWU won the 4x200-meter relay in 1:48.79.
  • Davonta Womack, Bridgewater, Sr., Jumps/Sprints
    January 28, 2019
    Womack, a senior from Roanoke, Va., put together a strong performance at the Finn Pincus Invitational hosted by Roanoke College over the weekend. Womack finished second overall and tops among NCAA Division III competitors in the long jump with a leap of 6.89 meters (22-7.25). That leads the ODAC seasonal chart and ranks 33rd in the country. Womack also took a turn on the track as he finished fourth in the 60-meter dash at 7.04 seconds. He as the only Division III competitor in the finals. He added prelim times of 6.99 and 7.02 seconds, all three of which would have finished inside the ODAC's posted top-five when combined with his finals mark.
  • Shamyra Wilkerson, Shenandoah, Sr., Sprints
    January 21, 2019
    Wilkerson, a senior from Manquin, Va., put together a strong performance at the Collegeville Classic with a pair of nationally ranked sprints. Wilkerson improved her 60-meter dash time to 0:07.95 by placing third in the event. That is the second-fastest time in the ODAC and ranks 33rd in NCAA Division III. Wilkerson was even better in the 200-meter dash, winning the event with an ODAC season-best time of 0:26.27. When that time is converted for track size for NCAA rankings, she sits 19th in the country at a converted time of 0:25.87.
  • Donovan Fiore, Washington and Lee, Jr.
    January 21, 2019
    Fiore, a junior from Gilbert, Ariz., put together a solid showing in two events at the Keydet Invitational hosted by VMI. Fiore was the top Division III finisher in the 200-meter dash, placing 14th overall out of 45 runners with a time of 0:22.38. That mark is ranked 28th in the country. For ODAC rankings, the conversion of his time to flat-track standards at 0:22.78 is the second-fastest this year. Fiore also competed in the 60-meter dash, finishing second among Division III competitors and 15th overall at 0:07.09. That mark ties his personal-best.

    Briggs, a senior from Marion, Va., continued her move up the ODAC season charts at the Keydet Invitational. She finished fourth overall and first among NCAA Division III competition by a half-foot in the high jump in clearing 1.60 meters (5-3.00). That mark strengthens her hold on the top spot in the ODAC ranks and sits 31st in NCAA Division III.
  • Coby Cockrell, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr.
    January 21, 2019
    Cockrell, a freshman from Gretna, Va., competed in two separate meets to cover participation in both indoor throwing events. At the Collegeville Classic hosted by Ursinus College, Cockrell finished fifth overall and second among NCAA Division III competitors in the shot put with a throw of 13.88 meters (45-6.50). That is the second longest throw in the ODAC this season. The previous day, Cockrell competed in the weight throw at the Dutchmen Invitational hosted by Lebanon Valley College. He finished second overall and tops among D-III athletes with a heave of 14.27 meters (46-10.00). That mark is #1 in the ODAC by more than two feet.

    Seybold, a senior from Cockeysville, Md., put together a nationally-ranked performance on the track at the Wilkins Center Invitational hosted by Shenandoah University. The event is the first meet hosted in SU's new facility. Seybold won the mile run with a time of 5:18.91 to take over first place on the ODAC season chart. When converted for track size for the national listings, her time of 5:15.78 ranks 20th in NCAA Division III.
  • Joe O'Connor, Washington and Lee, Fr.

    O'Connor, a freshman from Henrico, Va., competed in three events and picked up two wins in the first meet of the 2019 slate at the Wilkins Center Invitational hosted by Shenandoah University. The event is the first at SU's new facility. On the track, O'Connor won the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.86-seconds, good for fifth on the ODAC season charts. He then took to a pair of field events. He won the pole vault by clearing 3.65 meters (11-11.75), which ties his previous season-best time and puts him just outside the ODAC's top-five. O'Connor matched his personal-best mark in winning the high jump by clearing 1.83 meters (6-0.00). He is one of four individuals tied for fourth in the ODAC at that height.

    January 14, 2019
    Castellana, a junior from Boonton, N.J., won a pair of events in the jumps at the Wilkins Center Invitational hosted by Shenandoah University. The event is the first meet hosted in SU's new facility. Castellana took over the #2 position on the ODAC's seasonal chart in the high jump as she cleared 1.57 meters (5-1.75), leaving her just 0.01 meters off the top spot. Castellana also won the triple jump with a leap of 9.82 meters (32-2.50) to put her just outside the ODAC's top-five.

    Greenberg, a freshman from Allen, Texas, opened the 2019 slate of the indoor season by winning a pair of events at the Wilkins Center Invitational hosted by Shenandoah University. The event is the first meet conducted in SU's new facility. Greenberg won both the long and triple jumps in Winchester. He claimed the long jump at 6.55 meters (21-6.00), which ranks third in the ODAC. He reached 13.50 meters (44-3.50) in the triple jump, which slots fourth in the ODAC seasonal chart.
  • Shamyra Wilkerson, Shenandoah, Sr., Sprints
    December 10, 2018
    Wilkerson, a senior from Manquin, Va., put together a strong performance in the 60-meter dash at the Holiday Open hosted by Christopher Newport University. Wilkerson competed in two legs of the indoor sport's shortest sprint. She sprinted to ninth in the preliminaries at 8.07-seconds before improving three spots to sixth in the semifinals at 7.99 seconds as the top Division III competitor. While the meet has not yet been included in the national database, Wilkerson's semifinal time would be #1 in the ODAC and rank 20th in the country.

    Dudley, a junior from Norfolk, Va., blistered in the 60-meter dash at the Holiday Open hosted by Christopher Newport over the weekend. Dudley opened with a time of 7.03-seconds in the preliminaries to tie for second before winning the semifinal heat at 6.99-seconds. He again improved in the finals, winning the event in 6.97-seconds. While the meet has not yet been added to the national database, Dudley's time would rank better than any 60-meter time run by an ODAC athlete last season. It currently would slot third in the conference list this year and tie for 10th nationally.
  • Jaylyn Lane, Virginia Wesleyan, Fr., Jumps/Sprints
    December 10, 2018
    Lane, a freshman from Portsmouth, Va., was outstanding in her first collegiate meet with three strong individual performances and a relay contribution at the Holiday Open hosted by Christopher Newport University. Lane was the top Division III competitor in both the long and triple jumps. She finished second overall in both, reaching 5.24 meters (17-2.25) in the long jump and 11.02 meters (36-2.00) in the triple. While the meet has not yet been added to the national database, both marks would rank #1 in the ODAC by a wide margin. Her long jump distance would tie for 34th in the country, while her triple jump leap would be 17th in Division III. Lane took her turn in the track, finishing seventh overall in the 200-meter dash at 26.80-seconds. That would rank second in the conference and convert to tie for 23rd in the nation. Lane along with teammates Kwonsha Washington, Alizae Dollins, and Niya Crocker finished fifth in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:21.42.
  • Jason White, Shenandoah, So., Jumps/Sprints

    White, a sophomore from Roanoke took to a trio of events at the Holiday Open hosted by Christopher Newport University over the weekend. White was the top Division III competitor and finished second overall in the triple jump at 13.52 meters (44-4.25). He chimed in fourth overall in the long jump at 6.15 meters (20-2.25). While the meet has not yet been included in the national database, White's marks would rank third and fourth in the ODAC, respectively. His triple jump mark would be 19th in the country. White also took a turn on the track in the 200-meter dash, placing 37th at 24.20-seconds.
  • Kaitlyn Johnson, Lynchburg, So., Distance

    Johnson, a sophomore from Spotsylvania, Va., kept the momentum going from her All-American showing at the cross country national championships with a stellar performance at the Diplomat Open hosted by Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. Johnson finished second overall in the five-kilometer run at 17:55.74. That time broke the previous Lynchburg record by nearly 40 seconds and ranks fifth in the early going in NCAA Division III when converted to 17:47.57 for track banking. Johnson's time is already faster than any 5K time turned in by an ODAC runner last season and would have been the only mark to crack the 18-minute barrier.
  • DJ Petty, Randolph, Sr., Sprints/Hurdles

    Petty, a senior from Mechanicsville, Va., opened up his season with a trio of strong performances at the Bast-Cregger Invitational hosted by Roanoke College. Petty showed his class in his specialty, the 60-meter hurdles, as he won his preliminary heat with a time of 8.37-seconds, the ninth-fastest in NCAA Division III and tops in the ODAC. He later won the event at 8.44-seconds. Petty was arguably quicker in the 60-meter dash as he burned to 6.98-seconds to finish second in the finals. His prelim time of 6.92-seconds is #2 in the ODAC and #3 in the country. Petty also helped Randolph to third in the 4x200-meter relay with a time of 1:36.76.
