George Top Rookie, Goetsch Scholar-Athlete

SALEM, Va. --- Guilford College senior center Tyler Sanborn garnered the ODAC Player of the Year accolade, as announced on Thursday as part of the league's conference tournament festivities.  Eastern Mennonite University mentor Kirby Dean was tabbed the Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.  Hampden-Sydney College freshman guard Harrison George received ODAC Freshman of the Year honors, and Washington and Lee senior forward Ben Goetsch was selected as the 2010 ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Sanborn adds this season's player of the year honor to back-to-back All-ODAC First Team nods.  Sanborn is currently pouring in 20.3 points per game and grabbing a league-best 13.6 rebounds per contest heading into the ODAC Tournament.  He also leads the conference in field goal percentage at 65.0 percent on 208-of-320 shooting.  Sanborn has notched double-digits in all 25 games and has recorded 22 double-doubles this season.  Earlier in the year, he became the sixth Quaker to reach the 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds milestone.  For his career, Sanborn now stands 18th among Guilford's all-time leading scorers with 1,249 points and fifth in career rebounds with 1,008 boards.  His career total on the glass is also fifth in ODAC history.

Dean's top coaching honor marks just the first for him and the third for any EMU men's basketball coach.  Tom Baker was the last to receive the accolade in 1998.  Dean, in his seventh year at the helm, has made a national name for himself this season.  He guides one of the top scoring teams in the nation at 90-plus points per game.  The Royals entered new territory this season, earning the program's first national ranking.  Dean's squad, currently rated seventh in the nation, is 4-0 against fellow ODAC nationally-ranked teams.  EMU is also No. 1 in the South Region in the latest NCAA Division III regional rankings.

George has made an instant impact in the Tigers' line-up, proving to be an all-around threat.  He is fourth in the league in shooting at 58.5 percent, fifth in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game, sixth in steals with 48 and 13th in scoring at 14.4 points per game.  He scored in double figures in 22 of 25 games played and posted four double-doubles.  He notched a career-high 24 points on three different occasions.

Goetsch, former teammate Ben Heller '09 who collected the accolade a year ago, has had a banner year on and off the court.  He sports a 3.415 grade point average as a German and Economics major.  He is the only ODAC men's basketball athlete to the be named to the 2010 CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine All-District First Team, making him eligible for Academic All-America consideration.  He is also a multiple honoree on the All-ODAC Academic Team.  On the court, Goetsch posted 16.5 points and an ODAC second-best 8.5 rebounds per night.  His seven double-doubles are also second in the league.  He's reached double figures in scoring 22 times this season and has registered career highs in nearly every major category including scoring, rebounding, assists, steals and minutes played.
