Williams, UW-Stevens Point to Play for Title

SALEM, Va. --- Guilford College and Randolph-Macon College comprised one-half of the 2010 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball National Championship series in Salem on Friday, but neither ODAC competitor could make it past their respective semifinal opponents.  Guilford, which made its second straight trip into the D-III's final four, was topped by Williams College.  Randolph-Macon suffered its first setback in five games to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

WILLIAMS TOPS GUILFORD IN NCAA SEMIFINALS

SALEM, Va. --- Williams College made a NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship Series record 16 three-pointers and shot 70.4% from the field in the second half to propel the second-ranked Ephs past #3 Guilford College, 97-88, in the first semifinal in the Salem Civic Center.

Williams (30-1) moves on to face either the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point or Randolph-Macon College in the national championship game on Saturday, March 20 at 1:00 p.m. in the Salem, Va.  The game will be televised live by CBS College Sports Network.

Blake Schultz, the 2010 Jostens Trophy winner, collected 18 of his team high 25 points in the final 20 minutes of action, hitting four three-pointers to account for most of his 5-for-7 day from beyond the arc.  Alex Rubin led the Ephs with a 6-for-12 showing from downtown on the way to 18 points.  James Wang collected 19 points, hitting three from deep.  Nate Robertson went 4-of-6 from the field and shot 5-for-5 from the stripe on his way to 14 points.  Troy Whittington marked the fifth Williams’ player in double figures with 11 points and a team-best eight rebounds.

Tyler Sanborn, the 2010 ODAC Player of the Year, notched game-highs of 27 points and 13 rebounds, giving him is 30th double-double of the season in 33 possible games for Guilford.  He made 11-of-17 shots from the field.  Clay Henson dropped n 17 points, hitting a trio of three-pointers.  Rhett Bonner added 15 points, hitting all six of his attempts from the foul line.  Josh Pittman chipped in 13 markers on 5-of-9 shooting including a 3-for-6 day from three-pointer territory.

Guilford (30-3) commanded a 43-35 lead at the intermission that was powered by a 22-2 run to close out the first half.  Sanborn and Henson each notched 13 points lead the Quakers into the locker room with an eight-point advantage.

Williams came out firing in the second half, connecting on 19-of-27 (.704) shots from the field, including 10-of 14 (.714) from beyond the arc.  The Ephs also made all 14 of their free throw attempts.

BIG START LEADS UW-STEVENS POINT PAST RANDOLPH-MACON

SALEM, Va. --- The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point jumped to an early 16-3 lead on Randolph-Macon College in the second NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball semifinal on Saturday, but the Pointers had to withstand a strong second half-run before pulling out a 72-60 victory in the Salem Civic Center.

UW-Stevens Point (28-4) moves on to face Williams College (30-1) in the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championship Game.  The Ephs defeated Guilford College early in the day.  Saturday’s title contest is set for 1:00 p.m. in Salem, Va., and will be televised live by CBS College Sports.

UW-Stevens Point led by as many as 22 points in the first half as an even 13-of-26 shooting performance and stout defense afforded the Pointers a 38-19 lead going into the intermission.  Randolph-Macon (26-7) shot just 28% (7-of-25) and turned the ball over nine times in the opening frame.

After falling behind by 23 points with 17:43 to play in the second half, the Yellow Jackets responded with a 30-15 run over the next 14-plus minutes to pull within nine at 59-51 with 3:09 to go.  R-MC couldn’t pull any closer as UW-Stevens Point regained control through the final horn.

The Pointers’ Jared Jenkins led all scorers and four UWSP student-athletes with 17 points on 6-of-11 shooting.  Louis Hurd added 14 points while Matt Moses and Jerrel Harris chipped in 11 markers each.  Scott Hoelzel pulled down a game-best nine rebounds.

Adam Desgain led Randolph-Macon with 14 points, hitting 5-of-7 from the field including 2-of-3 from deep.  Danny Jones registered 11 points as the second of two Jackets in double figures.  Kevin Voelkel and Calvin Croskey each snared six rebounds.
