Washington and Lee's Franz Named Top Rookie

FOREST, Va. --- A pair of WildCats accounted for three of the major awards as part of the 2013 All-ODAC Men's Basketball Teams.  Randolph College guard Colton Hunt took home a pair of accolades as he was tabbed the Kurt Axe Memorial Player of the Year by the league's head coaches and the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award by the conference's sports information directors.  Randolph mentor Clay Nunley earned Bob Johnson Coach of the Year honors, while Washington and Lee University forward Andrew Franz was selected the ODAC Rookie of the Year.

Hunt, a senior guard from Whittier, N.C., picked up two major awards this season, including being named the ODAC/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the third straight year.  Just this week, Hunt was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year, as voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA) for Division III men's basketball.  A three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District first team honoree and a 2012 Academic All-America Third Team recipient, Hunt sports a 3.94 grade point average as an economics major with minors in physics and business.  He has also made Randolph's Dean's List each semester and is a member of the Omicron Delta Epsilon Economics Honor Society, the Sigma Pi Sigma Physics Honor Society, and the Chi Alpha Sigma Athletic Honor Society.  On the court, Hunt leads the league in scoring (24.8ppg), points (620), steals (71), and free throw percentage and free throws (84.3% on 166-of-197 shooting).  Currently, his points per night rank third in the country and his steals are tied for 12^th.  Hunt has scored better than 20 points in 19 games this season, including six contests of at least 30-point scoring outbursts.  He is also the first ODAC men's basketball player with over 1,800 points, 600 rebounds, 200 steals, and 200 assists. 

Nunley, in just his sixth season at Randolph, enjoys his second ODAC top coaching accolade in the last three years.  He has led the WildCats to their first 20-win season and first NCAA Division III regional ranking (seventh in the South Region) with a 20-5 overall record and an 11-5 conference mark.  The WildCats also earned the program's inaugural ranking in the D3hoops.com Top-25 national poll (#24) earlier this season. Nunley has guided Randolph to the title game each of the past two years and looks to continue that this weekend as the WildCats head into the tournament as the third seed. 

Franz, a freshman forward from Charlotte, N.C., has added a strong presence at both ends of the floor this year for W&L.  He leads the Generals in scoring at 11.8 points per game and has scored double digits in 14 games to go along with 4.6 rebounds each night out.  Franz's top-rookie honor is just the second ever for a W&L men's basketball player and the first in over 15 years.  Rich Peterson earned the accolade in 1997.
