Yellow Jackets Down Lions, Head to Round of 16

ASHLAND, Va. --- Junior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) recorded his sixth career double-double with 25 points and 13 assists as the No. 3 Randolph-Macon men's basketball team outlasted TCNJ 85-71 in the second round of the 2020 NCAA Men's Basketball Championship on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Senior Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) had a three-pointer to start the scoring for the Yellow Jackets. Following a trey by the Lions, sophomore Ian Robertson (Lewes, Del./Cape Henlopen) hit a triple and Anthony had a layup to put R-MC on top 8-3 with 15:20 left in the first half. The Yellow Jackets had a one-point lead at 13-12 before jumpers by Anthony and Turner gave the home team a 17-12 advantage with 10:45 remaining. TCNJ closed within three before a freshman Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) had a three-point play and a layup to give R-MC a 26-17 lead with 7:40 left. The Lions used a 20-8 run to take a 37-34 lead with 1:30 left. Anthony hit two free throws and Robertson nailed another trey to give the Yellow Jackets a 39-37 lead with 30 seconds remaining. TCNJ would hit a late three-pointer to take a 40-39 edge at the break. Freshman Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had 10 points, while Anthony, Robertson and Talbert all chipped in eight. Anthony had six assists.
  • Junior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) had the first three buckets of the second half for R-MC as the Yellow Jackets went up 45-42 with 17:30 remaining. TCNJ led 50-49 before a triple by Anthony and a layup by Robertson gave R-MC a 54-50 edge with 13:50 left. The Lions cut it to two before Anthony had eight points and Robertson had five in a 17-2 spurt as the Yellow Jackets took a 73-56 lead with 5:30 remaining. TCNJ used a 12-3 run to close within eight at 76-68 with just under two minutes left. R-MC would go 7 for 7 from the free throw line and Mallory would make a fast-break layup to make the final 85-68.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • R-MC had three score in double figures. Along with 25 by Anthony, Mallory put up 19 and Robertson added 17.
  • The Yellow Jackets had a 34-29 advantage on the boards. Mallory led with seven, while Anthony, Funderburg and Robertson each had five. R-MC had 11 offensive rebounds compared to three by TCNJ. The Yellow Jackets had an 18-0 edge in second-chance points.
  • R-MC committed just four turnovers and forced 16. The Yellow Jackets had an 18-2 advantage in points off turnovers.

  • R-MC has reached the Sweet 16 for the second straight season and the 10th time in program history. The Yellow Jackets went 1-1 in Division II and 2-5 in Division III.
