R-MC's Merkel Named Glenn Robinson Award Winner for Second Time

NEW ORLEANS, La. --- Randolph-Macon men's basketball coach Josh Merkel has been named the recipient of the Glenn Robinson Award for the second straight year.

The award is presented annually to the top Division III head coach, as voted on by the awards committee. The committee consists of current or retired head coaches as well as staff members of collegeinsider.com. Former Franklin & Marshall head coach Glenn Robinson is the chairman of the awards committee.

Merkel is the first coach to win a collegeinsider.com award in consecutive years at any level.

Previously, Merkel was selected as the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III Coach of the Year as well as National Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com. Merkel guided the Yellow Jackets to a 33-1 overall mark and 16-0 record in ODAC play. He was named ODAC Coach of the Year for the fifth consecutive season. R-MC rolled through the postseason, winning its third straight ODAC title before capturing the 2022 NCAA Division III National Championship with a 75-45 victory over Elmhurst. The Yellow Jackets won each of their NCAA Tournament games by at least 16 points. The 30-point victory in the title game was the widest margin in Division III history and matched the largest margin of victory at any level. UNLV beat Duke 103-73 in the 1990 Division I Championship Game.

A season ago, Merkel also won the Glenn Robinson Award after leading R-MC to a 12-0 record, an ODAC title and a victory over second-ranked Trine 69-55 to culminate the season.

Merkel is 148-38 (.796) in seven seasons at Randolph-Macon, including 10-1 in NCAA Tournament games. The Yellow Jackets have won 27 consecutive games, a program record, and 50 of their past 51 contests. Over the past four season, R-MC is 100-7 (.935) overall and 49-2 (.961) in ODAC contests.
