Randolph-Macon into Final Eight After Toppling Massachusetts-Dartmouth

ASHLAND, Va. --- Junior Miles Mallory (Beltsville, Md./St. Vincent Pallotti) had his 12t double-double of the season with 26 points and 17 rebounds, senior Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Molloy) had fifth double-double with 18 points and 12 assists, and sophomore Will Coble (Charlotte, N.C./Davidson Day) hit six three-pointers for 18 points, as the top-ranked Randolph-Macon men's basketball team defeated UMass Dartmouth 92-69 Friday evening in the third round of the NCAA Tournament to extend its win streak to 24 games and reach 30 wins for the first time.

HOW IT HAPPEN

  • The Corsairs had the first basket of the game before a layup by junior Josh Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) quickly tied it at 2-2. UMassD had a 15-11 lead before a three-pointer by Coble and a layup by Mallory gave the Yellow Jackets their first lead at 16-15 with 14:55 left in the first half. A layup by senior David Funderburg (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) and another triple by Coble put R-MC up 24-19 with 11:43 remaining. The Corsairs used a 9-2 spurt to go ahead 28-26 with 9:46 left. UMassD led 30-28 with 9:15 remaining before the Yellow Jackets closed the half on a 16-4 run to take a 44-34 lead at intermission. Anthony had five points during the run and finished with eight points and seven assists in the period. Mallory led all players with 12 points and nine rebounds.
  • Layups by sophomore Daniel Mbangue (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) and Mallory to start the second half gave the home team a 48-34 advantage 40 seconds in. The Corsairs cut the deficit to eight at 54-46 before Coble and Anthony both had six points in a 14-0 run as R-MC took a 68-46 lead with 10:25 remaining. The lead would not fall below 19 the rest of the way for the Yellow Jackets. Mallory had two layups to give R-MC its largest lead at 90-65 before finishing with a 92-69 victory.

BY THE NUMBERS

  • The Yellow Jackets had three score in double figures. Mallory had 26, while Anthony and Coble both put up 18.
  • Mallory went 10 for 16 from the floor and 6 for 6 from the free throw line.
  • Coble was 6 for 9 on three-pointers.

FOR THE RECORD

  • R-MC reached the Elite Eight for the fourth time in program history. The Yellow Jackets have won in two of the previous three Elite Eight appearances.
  • The Yellow Jackets extended the program record for wins in a season with 30. R-MC had won 28 in 2002-03, 2014-15 and 2019-20.
  • R-MC has won 24 straight games and 47 of its past 48 contests. It is the second-longest win streak in program history and one away from the record.
  • The Yellow Jackets extended their home win streak to 47 games, the longest current streak in Division III. The program record for home winning streak is 50 games, from 1961-66.
  • Over the past four seasons, R-MC is 97-7 overall (.933) and 49-2 in ODAC contests (.961).
  • Mallory had six blocks to raise his career total to 180, passing Pat Holland's R-MC record of 174. Mallory also broke his program mark for blocks in a season with 81, passing the mark of 75 he set as a freshman in 2019-20.
  • Anthony had 18 points to give him 1,939 for his career, the third-highest total in program history.
  • Anthony had 12 assists to give him 779, a program record.
  • Anthony had four steals to give him 247, the most in program history.

NEXT UP

  • Randolph-Macon will meet No. 13 WPI on Saturday, March 12, at 7:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the NCAA Division III Final Four next weekend on Fort Wayne, Ind. WPI edged RPI 56-55 in the day's first contest.
