LC’s Curran Wins a Pair of ODAC Men’s Lax Awards

VWC's Stewart, RC's Quinton Take Coach, Rookie Honors

SALEM, Va. --- Lynchburg College goalkeeper Garrett Curran added a little more fuel to an already exciting Hornets' campaign by earning the ODAC men's lacrosse Player of the Year award as well as the ODAC/Farm Bureau Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.  Virginia Wesleyan College mentor J.P. Stewart was named the Coach of the Year, and Roanoke College attack Matt Quinton was tabbed the Rookie of the Year.

Curran, from Hull, Massachusetts, helped lead the Lynchburg program to a 16-2 overall record, a perfect 6-0 ODAC mark, and the conference tournament title.  Curran's work between the pipes anchors the nation's third-best defense at fewer than six goals allowed per game. Individually, he ranks fifth in the nation in goals-against-average (5.97) and ninth in save percentage (.647), stopping 161 shots on the season.  In last weekend's ODAC championship win over Virginia Wesleyan, Curran shifted first-half momentum to the Hornets by grabbing a ground ball and running the length of the field to score an unassisted goal that cut the Marlins' lead to 5-4.

The senior sport management major boasts a 3.52 grade point average.  He has started each game of his four-year career, having earned multiple honors along the way including ODAC Rookie of the Year and an Honorable Mention All-America nod in 2005.

Quinton, a sophomore from Elora, Ontario, made the most of his first Maroons season by ranking near the top of two scoring categories in the ODAC.  He finished second in the conference in goals per game with a 2.64 mark.  He was also fourth in points per game at 3.57 an outing (37 goals, 13 assists, 50 points).  His high-game of the year came against Hood in which he notched five goals to go with four assists.

Coach Stewart guided the Marlins to the third seed and a berth in the championship game of the ODAC tournament.  His VWC squad defeated three of the four teams that were nationally ranked in several preseason publications.  While this year's 11-7 overall record is only one game better than a season ago, the Marlins' 4-2 conference mark was an improvement of two victories and a two position jump in the standings.
