Six Selected to Play in Annual North/South Game
FOREST, Va.
--- The United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association
(USILA) announced the 2011 NCAA Division III All-American teams,
and 12 ODAC student-athletes earned recognition. Lynchburg
College and Roanoke College placed four apiece amongst the second,
third and honorable mention lists. Hampden-Sydney College
boasts three award winners, while Washington and Lee University
garners the final honor.
Roanoke defenseman Alex Burkhead and midfielder Justin Tuma each
were tabbed USILA Second Team All-Americans. Burkhead
improved upon his ’10 honorable mention recognition with a
second team choice in 2011, while Tuma, the 2011 ODAC Player of the
Year, earned second team honors for the second-consecutive year. He
was a honorable mention selection in 2009. Attack Jeff Keating was
selected to the USILA All-America Third Team and midfielder Trey
Keeley was named to the honorable mention squad. As a team, Roanoke
ended the season with a 17-4 overall record and a 7-0 conference
mark, having advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division III
Men’s Lacrosse Tournament. Roanoke currently sits first in
the country in assists (10.52) and points per game (26.52), third
in scoring offense (16.00 goals/gm) and fourth in ground balls per
game (44.81).
Lynchburg is represented on the USILA All-America Third Team by
defenseman Joe Lisicky. Attack Dylan Hoff, midfielder Max
Voumard and goalkeeper Franc Cook were each tabbed to the honorable
mention squad. The Hornets wrapped up the 2011 campaign with
a 13-6 overall record and a 5-2 mark in league play. LC
advanced to the ODAC championship game for the second-straight
season. Lynchburg is ranked 23rd in scoring
defense (7.26). The Hornets were third in the league in goals
per game (11.37), ground balls per game (37.16) and man-up goals
(1.26).
Hampden-Sydney is well
represented on the USILA All-America Honorable Mention Team.
Attack Micah Keller and midfielders Cole Hawthorne and Carter
Mavromatis garnered awards, as the Tigers wrapped up the season
with a 12-5 overall record and a 4-3 conference record. H-SC
was second in the league in goals per game (11.88), ground balls
per game (37.24) and points per game (17.76).
Washington and Lee’s lone choice is defenseman Joe LaSala,
who was named a USILA Honorable Mention All-American. LaSala
was part of the Generals’ defense in 2011 that registered a
7.06 goals against average and a .564 save percentage.
In addition to the All-American honors, six student-athletes were
selected to play in the annual North-South College All-Star
Game. RC’s Tuma, Burkhead, Keeley and Drew Manley will
be joined by H-SC’s Hawthorne and W&L’s Austin
Wernecke in the 67th edition of the year-end
classic. Keeley will not participate in the event due to
injury. The game is scheduled for Friday, May 27 at 3:00 p.m.
