Voumard Nets Four Goals in Season-Ending Defeat

OWINGS MILLS, Md. --- The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team fell behind early to Stevenson University in the first quarter of the NCAA Division III Lacrosse Quarterfinals, ultimately dropping a 13-7 decision.

The first quarter was reminiscent of the first meeting between the two teams that saw Stevenson outscore Lynchburg 5-1 in the first 15-minute session.

Callum Robinson started the scoring for the Mustangs at 14:40 with an unassisted tally past Hornet keeper Adam Davey on the first shot of the game. Stevenson added three more goals off shots from Peter Green, Tyler Reid, and Pat Candon before the Hornets could get on the board at 2:02 when Todd Galvin found the back of the net on a bounce shot past the Mustang keeper.

Mark Pannenton added a goal for the Mustangs with one second remaining for a 5-1 lead after the first period. The Hornets were outshot 17-3 in the first quarter, but all three shots were on goal, resulting in the score by Galvin and two saves for Dimitri Pecunes.

Michael Crowe scored the first goal of the second quarter to extend the Mustang lead to five, 6-1, but the Hornets went on a scoring run from there.

Max Voumard notched a tally with 10:45 remaining in the second quarter on a shot from the far right wing to cut it to a four-goal lead before Thomas Rodenhouse netted his first goal of the season on a shot in close off a Derek Sweet pass.

Jay Goldsmith rounded out the Hornet scoring run with a goal two minutes later off a nifty pass from Aaron Murphy.  The Hornet defense held the Mustangs scoreless for 12 minutes in the second quarter, forcing five turnovers, to cut the lead to two.

"That was a big second quarter for us," Lynchburg coach Steve Koudelka said. "I think after we went on that run it was evident that we were back in the game."

Pannenton added two goals with a minute left to extend the Stevenson lead back to four, 8-4, heading into halftime while collecting an early hat trick in the process.

"I wouldn't say that those goals were deflating but they definitely hurt," Koudelka added. "Stevenson got some good looks and made some tough shots that would have been tough for any goalie to save."

Lynchburg got on the board first in the second half when Voumard scored his second goal of the game less than two minutes into the period to cut the lead back to three, but Stevenson answered with a pair of goals from Green and Nick Rossi to extend the Mustang lead back to 10-5. Stevenson added three more unanswered tallies before Lynchburg could make one final charge, down 13-5.

Voumard scored his third and fourth goals of the game on shots from the top of the circle to cut the lead back to six, but the Mustangs ran out the clock to preserve the victory.
Pannenton, Green, and Rossi each had multiple goals for the Mustangs, while Stevenson had a commanding lead in face offs, winning 16 of 22.

Davey had a game-high 15 saves for the Hornets.

Lynchburg finishes the season with a record of 14-6, including two wins in the NCAA Tournament.
