ODAC Men's Lacrosse Poll | Lynchburg Perched Atop Conference Ranks

ODAC Men's Lacrosse Poll | Lynchburg Perched Atop Conference Ranks

FOREST, Va. --- ODAC men's lacrosse teams got off to a fast start in 2020 with 42 combined wins at a .600 winning percentage when play was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Each team had at least two wins under their belts, a momentum building note that they hope carries into this season. The league's coaches took their turn at benchmarking this year's table in the 2021 ODAC Men's Lacrosse Preseason Poll.

The University of Lynchburg stands atop the annual survey having collected 99 total points powered by nine first place votes. Washington and Lee University garnered the remaining two top nods on the way to 91 markers. Hampden-Sydney College caps a top-three that has separated from the pack with 82 points.

Randolph-Macon College and Roanoke College sit deadlocked for fourth position with 69 points apiece.

STORYLINES: PICKING UP WHERE THEY LEFT OFF
The 2020 season was abruptly halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic with several developing storylines that teams will look reestablish as they open play in 2020.

  • Rare Air for Randolph-Macon | Speaking of building upon momentum from 2020, Randolph-Macon was in the midst of arguably its best start in program history. The Yellow Jackets rattled off seven straight wins before play was halted, making them one of just three squads in Division III to finish the season unbeaten with that many victories. The others were Salisbury University and Ursinus College. Can R-MC start off 2021 in similar fashion?
  • Wins in Hand | While Randolph-Macon -- along with Salisbury and Ursinus -- open 2021 with the longest active winning streaks in the country, six other ODAC teams start play with a chance to extend a winning streak into the previous season. Virginia Wesleyan won its final two games of 2020, while Ferrum, Guilford, Lynchburg, Randolph, and Roanoke each were victorious in their last games before the shutdown.
  • Returning All-Americans | Nine ODAC players picked up All-American laurels by Inside Lacrosse at the close of the 2020 season. Three of those players return this year. Lynchburg defense Tyler Gallagher was tabbed a Second Team All-American. The 2020 ODAC/Virginia Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete of the Year is joined by a pair of face-off men in Bridgewater's Mason Gauntt and Hampden-Sydney's Jake Brummett. Both received Honorable Mention All-American recognition.
  • More than One in the NCAA Tournament | Before last season's hiatus, the last time the ODAC didn't see more than one team carry the league banner into the NCAA Division III Tournament was 2014. Since 2015, at least two conference schools enjoyed national berths including an ODAC record-tying three teams in 2018 with Lynchburg, Roanoke, and Washington and Lee dotting the field. Despite a reduced field size in 2021, ODAC teams will look continue the conference's strong representation.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING NATIONALLY ENTERING 2021

  • As has become customary, ODAC teams feature favorably in some preseason rankings by national outlets. Four ODAC schools rank or received votes towards the USILA/Warrior and New Balance 2021 Men's Coaches Preseason Division III Poll. Lynchburg heads the list of with a 12th-place rating, while Washington and Lee sits 20th. Hampden-Sydney (4) and Randolph-Macon (2) are among 17 additional schools to receive votes towards the top-20.
  • Lynchburg and Washington and Lee also appear in the Nike/US Lacrosse Division III Men's Preseason Top-20 as published by US Lacrosse Magazine. The Hornets are slotted 13th while the Generals rank 19th.
  • Salisbury University is the #1 ranked team in both the USILA and US Lacrosse polls.
