Lynchburg Rolls by Pfeiffer in NCAA First Round

LYNCHBURG, Va. --- The No. 4-ranked University of Lynchburg men's lacrosse program flirted with the record book Saturday afternoon in a 26-11 NCAA tournament first round win over Pfeiffer on Shellenberger Field.

The win sets the Hornets up for a 2 p.m. second-round contest with Stevens, which defeated Catholic in the other first-round game, Sunday on Shellenberger Field. Tickets are available for purchase through Ticket Spicket.

Junior Ryan Kenney had six goals and two assists for the Hornets, and fellow junior Kyle Lewis notched six assists to go along with a goal of his own. Riley MitchellBrett Rogers, and Trammel Robinson each added a hat trick.

Lynchburg's 26 goals set a new high-water mark in the program's 25-game history in the national tournament. The Hornets recorded 42 total points in the game and 16 assists, second-most in program history in any single game for either category.

Rogers got the scoring started for the Hornets at the 12:12 mark in the first quarter, kicking off a 4-0 Lynchburg run to start the game that he bookended with his second goal (and Lewis' second assist) when the clock read 7:31.

Pfeiffer matched the Hornets goal for goal for the next stretch, but Lynchburg blew the game open with a 7-0 run to end the first half. Kenney played a large part in the run, taking part in five of the seven scores. He picked up his first assist, a dump to junior Josiah Martin at the 11:45 mark, and scored thrice before halftime rang. He also picked up his second assist, helping a Lewis goal at 6:51. Lynchburg led 16-5 at the half.

Kenney helped the Hornets pour it on after halftime, scoring three more times to come in one shy of his career-high in that department, and Lewis two more assists after intermission to become the sixth player in program history with six or more helpers in a game.

Senior Jack Albright led Lynchburg's defensive effort, causing a pair of turnovers.

The Hornets' NCAA tournament win marks the seventh year that Lynchburg has advanced in the national tournament, and Lynchburg improves to 9-2 on Shellenberger Field in NCAA competition.

Sunday's matchup with Stevens will be the sixth between the two schools. Lynchburg leads the all-time series, 4-1, but the Ducks took the most recent contest, 13-10 on March 13, 2011 in Lynchburg.
